The Future of the AWL IC Championship

Good evening ladies and gentlemen, I am the AWL Commissioner.

As we approach the conclusion of the 17th season of the Animated Wrestling League, we look forward to a main event where the Animated Wrestling League Intercontinental Championship will be cashed in for the right to challenge for the Grand Championship.  As exciting as this is for all of us here at Animated Wrestling League Headquarters, even more exciting is the prospect of crowning a new Intercontinental Champion after the title is cashed in.  It is for that reason that I have chosen to address you all today.

First, the by then vacant Animated Wrestling League Intercontinental Championship will be awarded to the winner of a 6-Way Scramble Match that will take place during the pre-season to Season 18 of the Animated Wrestling League.  That means we will have a freshly minted Intercontinental Champion when Season 18 officially begins at AWL 341.

Second, and I beg your forgiveness for burying the lead on this story, as of the conclusion of the cash in at AWL 340, THE ANIMATED WRESTLING LEAGUE INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIP SHALL BECOME THE EXCLUSIVE PROPERTY OF THE JOSHI DIVISION!

I have amended the AWL Rule Book to reflect the following change: As long as the Animated Wrestling League Roster remains split into gendered divisions, the Intercontinental Championship shall switch divisions every time it is cashed in.  That means that the first woman to successfully defend the Animated Wrestling League Intercontinental Championship 5 times will become The Complete Intercontinental Champion and will earn the right to cash in for a shot at the Animated Wrestling League Joshi Championship under the stipulations of her choosing.  At which point the championship will revert to the men’s division.

                THIS!  I have COMMISSIONED!!  BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!

--XOXO AWL Commissioner

Kid Canada announces stipulations for AWL 340.

The day has finally come!  The Complete AWL Intercontinental Champion Kid Canada has the right to name the stipulations for his cash in match for the AWL Grand Championship at AWL 340.  He's taken his time to come up with something that will insure a fair fight for the biggest prize in the Animated Wrestling League.  This morning, the following message arrived in the inbox at AWL HQ (we've removed the several paragraphs of apologizing for the delay):

Sorry, but I'm not going to play Jigoku's game and cheat in my favour, eh?  Sorry, I need this to be a fair fight, eh?  Sorry, but none of your friends...or mine...will be involved in this match because it's going to happen in a big old STEEL CAGE, eh?

Sorry, but it means a lot to me to know I'm a better professional wrestler than Hakaisha (or whatever Jigoku is calling him this week), eh?  Sorry, but I'm not going to beat you once, I'm going to do it twice, eh?  Sorry, this match is going to be 2 OUT OF 3 FALLS, eh?

--Kid Canada

He really is the most Canadian man in the world, isn't he?  Ladies and gentlemen, we have a main event for AWL 340:

The Final Challenge is Set!

Back at Obonnanza 2020, Kid Canada announced that he wanted to make the AWL Intercontinental Championship truly intercontinental by defending against wrestlers from 5 different nations.  Well, it looks like that was a mistake during a pandemic as we appear to have run out of countries from which to draw challengers.

OR SO WE THOUGHT!!

This past weekend, the following letter of challenge arrived at AWL HQ:

That Canadian clod has gotten my attention.  That was a serious miscalculation.  You seek competition based on arbitrary lines on a piece of paper?  Foolishness if you ask me, but so be it.  Despite its recent failures, my Project-Z is originally from Australia.  If you wish to prove that you deserve to face my Destroyer, prove it by beating one of my Augments this week at AWL 334.

Season 16 Finale Countdown part 2

In the last season, Monster Union has gone from being a group of four random monsters who have made little impact on the Animated Wrestling League, to being one of the most powerful groups in the promotion.  Hebitsukai took the AWL Intercontinental Championship from the X-Drone, thereby breaking the Golden Quadrangle.  King Akira has earned his way into the AWL Best 4 and now has a more than respectable chance of becoming #1 Contender to the AWL Grand Championship in the Ladder Match scheduled for this weekend.  Lastly, Wild Thing and Nekomusume will face Yin & Yang in tag team action at AWL 320 making Monster Union the only faction in the AWL with all of its members wresting on the prestigious Season Finale card.

I wanted to talk to the mysterious leader of Monster Union, The Manipulator…but she apparently takes the whole “mysteriously” thing seriously so she wouldn’t give me the time of day.  Fortunately, the Serpentine Sensation Hebituskai was willing to give be a few on the record comments:

Ryusensei (ME!): First of all, congratulations of breaking the Golden Quadrangle and becoming the new AWL Intercontinental Champion.

Hebitsukai: Thank you Ryussssenssssei.  But it wassss no big deal.  Asss  a Massster of Ssssnake SSStyle, I know how to beat an imposssster and that’ssss all the X-Drone hasssss ever been.  Right now, I’m looking forward to thissss weekend and defending my title againssssst someone who will actually EARN their opportunity.

Ryusensei: That was going to be my next question.  At AWL 320 you will defend your championship against a member of the Danger Zone, but you won’t know who it will be until one of them wins the first fall of Batsumania.  Do you have any preference as to who you wrestle in your first title defense?

Hebitsukai:  I’d like to facccce Mr. SSSSSmilesssss.  I’ve alwayssss liked that guy.  But in the end, they’re all in batsssssumania for a reassson.  I’m quite confident againssssst any of them.  Thissss belt isssn’t going anywhere.  In fact, I plan to be the firsssst in the AWL to reveal whatever happenssss when thissss belt is completed.

Ryusensei: I think we’re all looking forward to that.  Moving on to other members of your group.  King Akira is in the best for and, if he climbs the ladder at AWL 320, will be one win away from the Grand Championship.  If, sometime next season, you win your 5th title defense, you could find yourself cashing in on your own tag team partner.  Any thoughts about that?

Hebitsukai: That will be an incredible match.  I trained Akira to wresssstle.  I know jusssst how good he isssss.  If he climbsssss that ladder, he’sssss assss good asss Grand Champion.

Ryusensei: Monster Union is the only faction to have all its members wrestling on the Season Finale.  Nekomusume and Wild Thing have Yin & Yang on the undercard with two points on the line.  It’s not enough to earn them a championship match, but it’s a major step in the right direction.  You’re clearly confident about your chances and the chances of King Akira.  Do you think Monster Union can make it 3 for 3 at 320?

Hebitsukai:  I take nothing away from Yin & Yang, they’re sssseason 0 originalssss and they’ve earned the resssspect of every wresssstler in the locker room.  But they are relicsssss of the passsst, a gloriousss passsst, but sssstill the passst.  My comradessss are the future of the AWL.  If the match issss short, I think Yin & Yang have a good chanccccce.  But the longer it goesssss, the more likely we will be victorioussssss.  Can Monsssster Union go 3 for 3?  Abssssolutely!!

Ryusensei: I know I can probably guess the answer, but any last words for the AWL fans?

Hebitsukai: VIVA!  Monssssster Union!!

Joshi IC Title Match Promos

I’ve talked enough about tomorrow’s historic main event.  Now it’s time to hear from the women who will actually wrestle in this match.

Dr. Jigoku (Speaking for the X-Drone):
Huh?  What are you doing here?

Oh!  Right.  The title match.  I nearly forgot about that.  You want a statement?  Fine.  We’ll win.  Now go away, I have actual work to do and I find your stupidity highly distracting.

ResuYELLOW (This message translated from the original Japanese by the AWL Translation Team):
Dr. Jigoku may not care about this match, but WE do!  By “we” I mean both the Puro Sentai Resuranger and the entire AWL Joshi Division.  So far, we’ve been left out of the war between The Augments and the AWL.  Mainly because Jigoku’s female Augments aren’t good enough to compete with us.  Seriously, does anyone remember the last time KoroshiMACHINE won a wrestling match?
More importantly, we all know the X-Drone’s one and only trick by now.  Copy and paste.  Well, this weekend I’m going to show Dr. Jigoku what an original can do and the IC Title is coming back to the Animated Wrestling League and I am going to defend it against ALL comers.  Male, female, and everything inbetween!

Joshi Division Promos

This weekend at AWL 314, 8 women will face off in a Battle Royal to determine the first woman to challenge for the AWL Intercontinental Championship.  It only seems fair to give these competitors a chance to address the AWL Fans before this historic match.  It also works as an easy way to announce who will be in the match.

Jackie M.
First Joshi IC Champion.  Sounds good.  Sounds REAL good.  So does the idea of bashing a handful of skulls together and forcing my way back into a title match with that arrogant little shrimp Akira Merune.  I beat all her fancy holds before so I know she’ll never give me another title shot unless I force her to.  Suits me just fine!

Betty Bubbles
Like, this is totes awesome!  Girl power and some junk.  And, like OMG I, like, get to be in the match?!  They, like, never let me be in the important matches.  It’s totally cray-cray.  Totes unfair ya know?  But this time all I gotta do is stand in the ring the longest?  Yas Queen!  Bling belt, here I come!!

Emily Nagsaki
I stand in no woman’s shadow.  I’m proud of Jessica’s individual success and she more than deserves to be in the Best 4.  But this battle royal is my chance to stand out and accomplish something on my own in the Joshi Division.  I will not squander this chance.  皆さん頑張って下さい。もちろん私も頑張ります!

Usa-chan
When the Joshi division started, I was at the top of the standings.  One of the 4 who fought to be the first ever Joshi Champion…and I blew it.  One massive mistake that has defined every day of my career since then.  Then, just when I make it back to the Best 4…BAM!  Injury time.  This IC title match means a route back to the top and I’m ready to remind the world what a badass bunny can do!

Nekomusume (This message translated from the original Japanese by the AWL Translation Team)
Too many in the AWL locker room think Monster Union is a joke just because we’ve never won any titles-nya.  Well, we’re a group on the rise!  King Akira is in the men’s Best 4 and now I’ve been chosen to represent us in this IC battle royal-nya.  Just watch me and see what a monster can do.  VIVA!  MONSTER UNIONYA!!

ResuYELLOW (This message translated from the original Japanese by the AWL Translation Team)
I’m grateful nobody has made the obvious and hurtful joke about me being in this battle royal.  I’d like to thank my partner ResuPINK for letting me step up and represent the Resurangers in this match.  I feel as if I have something to prove as a Joshi wrestler.  But this isn’t about me.  It’s about breaking the Golden Quadrangle and stopping Dr. Jigoku from taking over the entire AWL.  The first step on that path is this weekend.  From there?  We’ll find out together.

Yin
If you’re wondering why I’m in this match rather than my sister, she lost rock-paper-scissors.  We’ve held “men’s” titles in the past.  We’ve won “women’s” titles in the past.  But this is our first chance to turn one into the other.  It will be an interesting application of…balance.

Dragoness
I’ve been a tag team champion, but I’ve never been a part of a Golden Duo before.  That’s something not even Dad ever accomplished in the AWL.  And taking a title away from The Augments?  Even better!  Dad told me stories about how he and The Dragon School or The AWL All Stars would work together to defeat enemies none of them could beat on their own.  I’ve always wanted to be a part of something like that.  If I can do my bit to break the Golden Quadrangle, I know it’ll make my family proud.

Tune in this weekend to AWL 314 for the AWL IC #1 Contender’s Battle Royal and a whole lot more right here in the Animated Wrestling League.

History to be made!

The AWL Commissioner has made a MASSIVE announcement!  Since the X-Drone is capable of reconfiguring itself into male or female forms, this gives us a unique opportunity to do something that has never been done before in the AWL:

In 2 weeks at AWL 315, the X-Drone will defend the AWL Intercontinental Championship…IN THE JOSHI DIVISION!!

A match of this significance requires much more than a simple announcement of a challenger.  That’s why this weekend’s AWL 314 even will start with an Over the top rope Battle Royal to determine the #1 Contender to the AWL IC Championship,

Full Card for AWL Supercard: Golden War 2020

The matches are set.  The Golden Quadrangle faces its first real test at the hands of some of the best the AWL has ever seen.  Tag team partners will clash, mysteries will be unveiled, and stars will rise.  We may be staying home to save lives, but the wrestlers of the Animated Wrestling League are going to WAR!

AWL Supercard: GOLDEN WAR 2020!
MAIN EVENT
Jigoku DESTROY (C) vs. ResuRED (#1)
AWL Grand Championship Match
3rd Title Defense
In the main event, the greatest prize in all of animated wrestling will be on the line as the leader of the most prominent heroes of the AWL faces Dr. Jigoku’s newest and most successful Augment.  The winner of the 2020 edition of the prestigious New Year’s Tournament.  An AWL Triple Crown Champion.  The most successful wrestler in terms of both career wins and win-loss records.  The only augment DR. Jigoku has ever put his name on.  Jigoku DESTROY!  It’s a clash between hero and monster for the AWL Grand Championship!

The Augments (C) vs. The New Classics (3)
AWL World’s Tag Team Championship Match
1st Title Defense
From the leader of a great team to the undisputed greatest team in the history of the AWL.  Two Season 0 Originals that have held the AWL World’s Tag Team Championships a record setting six times defeating legendary teams like The All Americans, Big & Spicy, The AWL All Stars, Bullet Club, and Nippon Yokatta to win the gold.  What do all those teams have in common?  None of them exist in the AWL anymore and, apart from Bullet Club, none of them exist at all.  We can only hope the Augments will join that list.

X-Drone © vs. Azteckaizer NEO
AWL Intercontinental Championship Match
1st Title Defense
When it comes to the only championship in the AWL where the AWL Commissioner has unilateral authority to name a challenger, he is not pulling ANY punches.  He has named the most recent former AWL Grand Champion and man with one of the most impressive win-loss records in the AWL.  Furthermore, it’s possible that the X-Drone’s duplication systems will be unable to copy the full power of the Star of Aztec.  But can we risk the power of the IC title on a mere possibility?

Dragoness © vs. Akira Merune (#1)
AWL Joshi Championship Match
4th Title Defense
The only title match at this year’s Golden War that doesn’t involve the Golden Quadrangle.  Dragoness has done a respectable job of establishing herself as a champion with some impressive and decisive title defenses.  But now she faces far and away the biggest challenge of her career, her own tag team partner and the woman who defined the AWL Joshi Championship.  Dragoness has never defeated Akira Merune in a title match.  Now she must or lose her best just as her title reign is hitting its stride.

K & K (0) vs. Yamada Jiro & X (0)
Points in Play
Yamada Jiro seems to be on a roll when it comes to getting on his soap box and lamenting the sins of the Japanese people…and then losing matches to the people he calls out.  This time, he’s doubled his trouble and set his sights on the team of former stable mate Kyoujin Kobayashi and all time asshole Tanaka Kenichi.  As much as I personally oath the idea of hoping Tanaka Kenichi wins a match, this might be an exception.  But Yamada has one rather large problem…everyone hates him.  He claims to have a partner lined up, but I’ll believe it when I see it.
Ma-Ji-Ku vs. ????
Just yesterday, a strange post was made to this blog by person or persons unknown.  Nobody knows who posted it, but the only part that made sense was that a challenge has been laid down.  As a result, the Warrior of Light has agreed to take on this open challenge.  He knows something about the forces of darkness, so there’s none better to be the first to tackle what ma be a new threat to the Animated Wrestling League.

Hasaiki vs. Mr. Smiles vs. Michael Dunne vs. Hifumi Ryuji vs. King Akira vs. The Roc vs. Black Tiger Justice vs. Satoshi Tobu.
Over the Top Rope Battle Royal!
It’s a simple fact of the professional wrestling business that matches on Supercards pay better than normal bookings and winning on a Supercard pays better still.  That’s why the AWL Commissioner has decided to take 8 wrestlers from lower down the rankings of the AWL and throwing them into this battle royal situation.  No titles are on the line but momentum and an all important trip to the pay window most certainly are!

Two title matches announced for Golden War 2020

With the next AWL Supercard right around the corner, the AWL Commissioner is wasting no time finding challengers to try and take the AWL championships back from Dr. Jigoku’s Augments.

Jigoku DESTROY (C) vs. ResuRED (#1)
AWL Grand Championship Match
3rd Title Defense
The bad doctor’s greatest weapon faces the leader of the Purosentai Resurangers.  Now, to be clear, this is ResuRED’s rightful  shot as #1 contender in the AWL Best 4.  Red is NOT cashing in his Golden Opportunity.

X-Drone (C) vs. Azteckaizer NEO
AWL Intercontinental Championship Match
1st Title Defense
Yeah, the Commissioner is pulling out the BIG guns for this one, isn’t he?  X-Drone is only a few days into his reign as AWL IC Champion and his first challenger is the most recent former AWL Grand Champion!  I guess with The Augments controlling all the men’s gold, there’s no room for half measures.

As for the tag team titles, there’s plenty of time for a team to make their way to 3 points.  Over in the Joshi division, well…tune back in tomorrow.

Jigoku makes demands

The AWL Commissioner owes me a match.  Last I looked, the rule was that if you defeat a champion in a non-title match, you earn the right to challenge for that title.  Well, my personal destroyer defeated Hassan in the New Year’s Tournament on his way to total victory.  Yet, no title match!  Now, I wouldn’t want to accuse the AWL Commissioner of breaking his own rules to accommodate his…OBSOLEETE…human wrestlers.  No, no, no.
The Commissioner’s little sycophants claim that my creation’s status as a member of the AWL Best 4 “precludes him from competing” for the Intercontinental Title.  Pretending I believe that for a moment, fine!  I propose a compromise.  If one of my creations cannot challenge for that fancy new belt, another one will.
I demand a match at AWL 304 for the Intercontinental Championship: Hassan vs. DB-02!  The Dorei Corps experiment has run it’s course anyway.  May as well see if the dumb bunny is still worth anything to me.

Two Title Matches Set for AWL 303

With all the excitement around the Reshuffle Match last weekend and the AWL Commissioner’s announcement yesterday, it’s easy to forget that we have two championship matches set for this weekend’s AWL 302 event including the debut of a BRAND NEW CHAMPIONSHIP BELT!!
Hassan (C) vs. Chiba Akagi
AWL Intercontinental Championship Match
1st Title Defense
Hassan has privately commissioned a brand new IC title belt.  He’s been tight lipped about it and NOBODY including his Sekai-gun teammates have actually seen the thing.  All I’ve been able to pry out of him is that the new belt “Uses state of the art championship technology.”
After last week we also have new #1 contenders for the Joshi Tag Team Championship and that match will also take place at AWL 303:

Queens of Wrestling (C) vs. UK Gen2 (3)
AWL Joshi Tag Team Championship Match
1st Title Defense
With the demise of The Empire, the second generation British Joshi wrestlers need this win to pick up the pieces of their careers and move forward into Season 16.  On the other hand, the Queens of Wrestling have been proven vulnerable and losing their first defense of this reign with the tag team titles would be the final nail of their status as the top two of the Joshi Division.

IC Title News and Rumors CONFIRMED!

Rumors have been circulating for weeks that AWL Intercontinental Champion Hassan has commissioned a NEW IC title belt that will debut in the near future.  Well, this weekend I got personal confirmation from The Arab American Dream himself:

“Yeah, it’s true.  I have no idea who let it slip but yes, I’m having a new belt made.  Our victory over WWE was years ago and it doesn’t make sense to keep carrying around their belt when they don’t even used that design any more.  So, the old AWL (and formerly WWE) IC strap is going on a shelf in my house and the new AWL IC Title will be making it’s debut the next time I walk to the ring to defend it.
I designed the new belt myself and man, it’s the coolest belt anyone’s seen in years!  Trust me.”
--Hassan

Speaking of the IC title, the AWL Commissioner has announced a #1 Contender’s Match for the IC Championship at next weekend’s AWL 302 event:

Chiba Akagi vs. Erupcion Solar
AWL IC #1 Contender’s Match

Matchmaking 101 if you ask me.  Both of these wrestlers
picked up singles victories at the Season 16 premier last weekend, so it’s only fair they be rewarded with an opportunity to fight for a title.

Matt Classic Speaks

The following message arrived by courier to AWL HQ this morning.

To whom it may concern,
My son lost the right to wrestle in the AWL thanks to Ganba Hisshi DARK.  Yes, my son chose to invoke the Test of 10.  But it was Ganba that not only ended his AWL career but injured him so severely in the process that he hasn’t wrestled a single match since.  He may never wrestle again.
I don’t blame Ganba for winning the match.  That would be insane.  I blame Ganba for being unprofessional about it.  Ever since I started this business, there’s always been a code amongst wrestlers.  Fight hard.  Fight to win.  Fight to feed yourself and your family.  But ALWAYS remember that the other guy has his family to feed too.  He has his own bills to pay.  So, fight to win, but not to injure and NEVER to cripple or kill.  Recognize they the other guy has to earn a living too.
Ganba has broken that code FAR too many times.  He’s lost the right to call himself a wrestler and he has no business carrying the AWL Grand Championship around his waist!
So, I’m going to take it from him.  I need 5 matches against 5 opponents.  I’m asking the AWL Commissioner to find me those matches as fast as possible.  I know I don’t have enough time between now and AWL 280 to earn (that’s right Ganba, EARN) my right to become champion.  But I’m an old man and I can’t afford to wait too long.

Matt Classic.

IC Title Promos

In less than 24 hours the AWL Intercontinental Championship will be on the line as the defending Erupcion Solar pits his Lucha Libre skills against the inventor of professional wrestling, Matt Classic Sr.  As per AWL custom (meaning whenever I get around to it), this final blog post of the week shall be turned over to the champion and challenger to say their piece before the match.  First, the challenger:

Matt Classic Sr. (Transcribed from a letter apparently written on a typewriter.)
Dear Erupcion Solar,
Listen up kid.  I like you.  Yer one heckofa wrestler.  But that doesn’t matter right now.  You have something I need.  I’m an old man, I admit it.  I don’t know how many matches I have left in me and I have something I need to do before this old body of mine forces me back into retirement.  I need to stop Ganba or whatever he’s calling himself these days.  He ended my son’s career.  So, I’m going to take the only thing he cares about: His belt.
This is personal.  This is family.  I don’t have the time to wait around for a tournament or for the AWL Commissioner to give me a chance to get on the waiting list.  So, I need the AWL IC belt so I can carve my own path to Ganba.
No offence kid, but I’m going to give ya the old airplane spin and before you can get up I’mma lock on the Claw and that will be that.
                Sincerely,
                Matt Classic Sr.

Erupcion Solar: (Translated from the original Spanish by the AWL Translation Team.)
Fine.  Classic wants to look past me.  He wants to act like I’m some stepping stone to bigger and better things?  Suits me.  People have been underestimating me my entire career.  Nippon Yokatta took me lightly and I took their belt.  My…ex…partner looked down his nose at me, and I humiliated him in front of the world at the Golden War.  Now one of the few American wrestlers I grew up admiring decides to look past me?  Good.

Championship Match and Full Card Announced for AWL 275

More of a confirmation than an announcement really.  At the Golden War, Matt Classic Sr. won an 8-man over the top rope battle royal to become the next challenger to the AWL Intercontinental Champion.  Since Erupcion Solar would defeat his former tag team partner that very same night, this match was inevitable:
AWL 275:
MAIN EVENT
Erupcion Solar (C) vs. Matt Classic Sr.
AWL Intercontinental Championship Match
4th Title Defense

Men’s and Women’s Scramble Matches
Fight(s) for 4
I talked about both of these matches in yesterday’s blog post.  Please scroll down to see that post.  The winners will join both of their fellow Best 4 members at AWL 276 to fight for the right to challenge for the AWL Grand Championship at the Season 14 Finale.

The Roc vs. THUGLIFE Tanaka Kenichi
At Golden War 2019, the biggest WTF disconnect between entrance attire and ring attire in the history of professional wrestling as The Roc won his Graduation Match and won an AWL Main Roster Contract.  This weekend, he will make his regular season debut against someone I think we ALL want to see get their ass kicked, am I right?

Monster Union (0) vs. The Flying Yukis (0)
2 Point/20 Minute Match
Points in Play
Speaking of debuts, King Akira joined Monster Union at the Golden War.  But they were unable to solve the puzzle of The Flying Yukis.  This weekend the monsters will face Hiroyuki Shota and the  thankfully no longer bleeding all over the locker room FLASH Nobuyuki with two points on the line and hopefully enough time to settle things between these absurdly different teams.

Finale Countdown Part 3: IC Title and BREAKING NEWS!

BREAKING NEWS!!

We know that Erupcion Solar will challenge the fake Liger for the AWL Intercontinental Championship.  Since everyone with a pulse has figured out that the rest of Nippon Yokatta will be at ringside to cheat for…I mean…cheer on Liger, Solar has found some back up of his own.  No, not Estrella Dorada, he’s still on the injured list.  Erupcion will be seconded by:

THE REAL JUSHIN THUNDER LIGER!!!!!
