Tag Matsuri Main Event Announced!

 Greetings Grapple Fans!

The AWL Commissioner has announced that AWL 335 will be this year's TAG MATSURI!  For those of you who are new to the Animated Wrestling League, the Ta Matsuri is our annual fall event where we celebrate the tradition and artistry of tag team wrestling.  Naturally, both AWL Tag Team Championships will be defended.

Additionally, AWL Head Trainer Dragon has announced that 4 wrestlers have made sufficient progress in their training that they are ready to advance to the main roster.  Therefore, there will be a Tag Team Graduation Match at the Tag Matsuri.  I should point out that the last team to win a Tag Team Graduation Match, the Flying Yukis are now former AWL World's Tag Team Champions.

In the past, the Tag Matsuri has always featured a tag team gauntlet contested to 3 points under our old 3 point system.  Since that system has fallen into the dustbin of history, the AWL Commissioner has come up with a new gauntlet that will take advantage of the tag team edition of the AWL Best 4:

2020 Tag Team Gauntlet:

Match 1: Best 4 #4 vs. Best 4 #3

Match 2: Winner of Match 1 vs. Best 4 #2

Match 3: Winner of Match 2 vs. Best 4 #1

Match 4: Winner of Match 3 vs. House Classic (C)

Two Matches Signed for Sakuramania Wrestlegenesis 2020!

The main event of our spring Supercard was decided last weekend at AWL 306:

Jigoku DESTROY (C) vs. Tiger Mask II (#1)
AWL Grand Championship Match
1st Title Defense

We have to stop Dr. Jigoku from taking over all the championships of the Animated Wrestling League.  The man who defeated Tiger the Great III to become the final Global Wrestling Monopoly Heavyweight Champion sounds like just the cat for the job.

On the complete opposite end of the card, the AWL Commissioner has heard from Dragon, head trainer at the AWL Dojo and 1st AWL Champion, that he has two students ready to move up to the main AWL Roster.  Overjoyed at this news, the AWL Commissioner has approved the following for Sakuramania Wrestlegenesis:

Takamichi Shin vs. Satoshi Tobu
AWL Dojo Graduation Match

It’s been a while since we’ve had a Graduation Match, so
I’ll go over the rules.  1 fall, 10 minute time limit.  The winner
graduates from the dojo and becomes a full time AWL Wrestler.  The loser returns to the dojo for further training.  They may or may not get a second chance in the future.  In the event of a time limit draw, BOTH wrestlers return to the dojo to continue their training.  In order to give the new wrestler a clean start in the AWL, Graduation Matches are NOT counted towards the AWL Win Loss Records.

Graduation Match Announced!!

For the first time since the return of the Animated Wrestling League, AWL Head Trainer (and first AWL Champion) Dragon has informed the AWL Commissioner that he has two students who are ready to face each other in their Graduation Match!

A Graduation Match is the final step in completing your studies at the AWL Dojo and becoming a full time member of the AWL Roster.  It’s a one on one match contested under standard AWL Rules.  The only unusual thing is that it’s NOT counted in the AWL Win-Loss Records.  That’s so the loser, if and when they win a Graduation Match in the future, doesn’t start their AWL career in negative numbers.

What makes this Graduation match interesting is who’s in it.  We at the AWL have had a long unofficial association with Chikara.  Their wrestlers are always welcome on our shows, their Grand Champion competed in the Kyukyoku no Summit last year, and now I can finally announce that Chikara has been sending some of their Wrestle Factory prospects to us as a form of excursion similar to what the Young Lions in New Japan go through.  So, if this first name sounds familiar to you that’s why:

Equinox IV

Long time Chikara fans know the history of that name and that mask so you’ll understand why we here at the AWL consider it an honor to have contributed to his training.
The next name?  You don’t have to know a single thing about a single wrestler or promotion outside of the AWL to know that this is a big freaking deal:

El Hijo del Ma-Ji-Ku

You.  Read.  That.  Right!  The son of Ma-Ji-Ku has been training in secret in the AWL Dojo with his father’s blessing for over a year.  That’s one reason Ma-Ji-Ku never signed a full-time deal with GWM, he didn’t want his son exposed to that kind of wrestling.

In Lucha Libre culture, it’s a big deal for a father to pass his name, and more importantly his mask, on to the next generation.  It’s an honor that has to be earned and the fact that El Hijo del Ma-Ji-Ku has earned his mask before even having a single professional match says a lot about the potential of this young man.

So, at AWL 232, it will be legacy vs. legacy and we’ll see which legend begins anew.

A look to the future...one way or the other.

I may not be the biggest New Day fan in the world, but there’s something to be said for the power of positivity.  Working under the assumption that Luke James is going to defeat Tiger the Great III this Sunday and that there WILL be an AWL Season 12, the AWL Commissioner asked AWL Dojo Head Trainer Dragon to select two of his best students for a Graduation Match at AWL 220!

It’s been a while since the last graduation match, so I’ll remind you of the rules.  Two students from the AWL Dojo face each other in a 1 fall 10 minute time limit match.  The winner receives a full time AWL Contract and joins the main roster, the loser either returns to the AWL Dojo for further training, or is expelled from the AWL (a decision entirely at Head Trainer Dragon’s discretion).  Win or lose, the Graduation Match is NOT counted in the AWL Win-Loss Rankings.  That allows all graduates a clean slate when they join the main roster.

That’s the good news.  As you might imagine, there’s some of the other kind as well.  Miss X of Global Wrestling Monopoly has another of her stupid press announcements that, for some reason, the AWL Commissioner insists I publish:

GWM Universe!

This weekend at the final ever AWL event, Global Wrestling Monopoly proudly presents a Tag Team Open Invitational!

To give all members of the GWM Universe a preview of the type of sports entertainment you will have the privilege of enjoying once we shut down the AWL, the GWM World’s Tag Team Champions, The Miracles have issued an open invitation to any tag team in the world for a non-title exhibition match at AWL 220!

While this match is non-title, if the lucky tag team who accepts this challenge were to defeat Miracle 1 and Miracle 2, they would receive an automatic title match on a future date to be determined.

This special offer is first come, first served, so bring it on!

--Miss X

So, two new matches added to AWL 220 on top of an already stacked card.  And it’s only Wednesday!!!

(Editor’s note: We’re ignoring the end of the Tiger Mask W anime for reasons of plot convenience.)
