Tag Matsuri Main Event Announced!

 Greetings Grapple Fans!

The AWL Commissioner has announced that AWL 335 will be this year's TAG MATSURI!  For those of you who are new to the Animated Wrestling League, the Ta Matsuri is our annual fall event where we celebrate the tradition and artistry of tag team wrestling.  Naturally, both AWL Tag Team Championships will be defended.

Additionally, AWL Head Trainer Dragon has announced that 4 wrestlers have made sufficient progress in their training that they are ready to advance to the main roster.  Therefore, there will be a Tag Team Graduation Match at the Tag Matsuri.  I should point out that the last team to win a Tag Team Graduation Match, the Flying Yukis are now former AWL World's Tag Team Champions.

In the past, the Tag Matsuri has always featured a tag team gauntlet contested to 3 points under our old 3 point system.  Since that system has fallen into the dustbin of history, the AWL Commissioner has come up with a new gauntlet that will take advantage of the tag team edition of the AWL Best 4:

2020 Tag Team Gauntlet:

Match 1: Best 4 #4 vs. Best 4 #3

Match 2: Winner of Match 1 vs. Best 4 #2

Match 3: Winner of Match 2 vs. Best 4 #1

Match 4: Winner of Match 3 vs. House Classic (C)

AWL World's Tag Team Championship Match

    1st Title Defense

Tag Matsuri Update #2

A new match has been added to AWL Supercard: Tag Matsuri 2019!  After a successful debut last weekend, the newest registered AWL tag team, Jushin Thunder Liger and Erupcion Solar, have one point in the AWL Tag Team Division.  Unfortunately, their paperwork arrived a day too late for them to qualify for the Tag Team Gauntlet Match at the Tag Matsuri.
Fortunately, the AWL Commissioner has decided that they still deserve a place on the card.  So, he has booked the following match:

Liger & Solar (1) vs. Nippon Yokatta (Lie-ger & Hifumi Ryuji) (1)
Points in Play
Tag Matsuri Rules in Effect!

Between this, two tag team gauntlets, and two tag team title matches, the Tag Matsuri has the potential to be a LONG show.  So, expect it to be split over two or even three videos.

Tag Matsuri Report #1

It’s that time of year again wrestling fans, as the evil oppressive heat finally starts to subside, the Tag Team Division of the Animated Wrestling League starts to heat up as we approach our fall Supercard: The Tag Matsuri!
For years, the Tag Matsuri has been our annual tribute to the often maligned art of tag team wrestling.  By AWL custom no points can be lost during the Tag Matsuri!  However, points can still be cashed in (and they will be).
We’re still about three weeks away, but here’s what the AWL Commissioner has announced so far:
AWL SUPER CARD: TAG MATSURI 2019
MAIN EVENT
Queens of Wrestling (C) vs. TBD (3)
AWL Joshi Tag Team Championship Match
4th Title Defense

AWL World’s Tag Team Championship Match
3rd Title Defense

Men’s Tag Team Gauntlet Match
To be contested to 3 points

Joshi Tag Team Gauntlet Match
To be contested to 3 points

We don’t know who the challengers will be yet, but if nobody has three points by the start of the Tag Matsuri, then the winners of the Tag Gauntlet will challenge immediately.

Tag Matsuri and Title Matches Announced

Greetings grapple fans!  The AWL Commissioner has confirmed two big events on the AWL calendar.  First, our annual fall Super Card where we celebrate the art sport of tag team wrestling.
AWL Tag Matsuri 2018
October 3rd, 2018
If you are new to the AWL, there are three things you need to know about the Tag Matsuri:

1. NO POINTS CAN BE LOST DURING THE FESTIVAL.  Points may be cashed in, but they cannot be lost.

2. THE AWL WORLD TAG TEAM TITLES MUST BE DEFENDED.  If there are no teams with 3 points, the champions will face the winners of…

3. THE TAG TEAM GAUNTLET MATCH.  Contested to 3 points.  Two teams begin, after every fall, another team enters immediately until one team has 3 points.

The Tag Matsuri is always one of the most exciting nights of the year and is always a jolt of energy into the tag team division as there are possibly dozens of points available.  The second big event coming up is the 250th episode of the Animated Wrestling League!!
AWL 250: Golden Anniversary!
October 7th, 2018
MAIN EVENT:
THUGLIFE Tanaka Kenichi (C) vs. Wyvern (#1)
AWL Grand Championship Match
4th Title Defense

But that won’t be the only title on the line at AWL 250:
Akira Merune (C) vs. TBD (#1)
AWL Joshi Championship Match

“Why TBD?” I can hear you ask, “Isn’t Joya the #1 contender?”  Well, yes…for now.  That brings us to this weekend at AWL 248:

Joya (#1) vs. Jackie M. (#2) vs. Yin (#3) vs. Yang(#4)

Winner Challenges at AWL 250

Back to Business

Everyone here at the Animated Wrestling League is extremely sorry about the hiatus last week. One of these days we're going to learn not to do things like try to produce 4 hours of wrestling in a week. We've got most of the problems sorted out now (though we're still having some problems with the production equipment) and we're ready to move forward.

AWL 187 is scheduled for this Sunday Japan time and the full card will be announced tomorrow. But before that, we have some house keeping to do:

1. By order of the AWL Commissioner and due to his victory over Mahou Crusher at AWL 186, Ma-Ji-Ku is hereby named to the AWL Best 4 and Mahou Crusher is reduced by one rank. The AWL Best 4 now looks like this:

#1. Usagi Kick
#2. Mahou Crusher
#3. Project Tetsu
#4. Ma-Ji-Ku

2. After the Tag Matsuri, the AWL Tag Team Division looks like this:

AWL World's Tag Team Champions:
The Destroyers of DOOM!

Tag Team Rankings:
The All Americans: 2 Points.
Spicy Black: 2 Points.
The Empire: 2 Points.
Liga Cosmica: 2 Points.

The New Classics: 1 Point.
RUZAI: 1 Point.
Shin Jidai (Wyvern & Matt Classic Jr.): 1 Point

All other teams: 0 Points.

I don't remember a time we had that many teams with points on the board and we've NEVER had 4 teams with two points. Before the Tag Matsuri, the Destroyers of DOOM asked for more competition.....and they're going to get it!

3. The AWL Clash of Styles Tournament is underway. This Sunday represents the start of the second round of matches in the round robin tournament. Here are the current standings:

1. Lucha Libre: Ma-Ji-Ku (2/6)
1. Hardcore: Tanaka Kenichi (2/6)
1. Specialists: Sammy Nix (2/6)
1. Powerhouse: HAKAISHA! (2/6)

2. Strong Style: Yamada Jiro (0/6)
2. Technical: Kid Canada (0/6)
2. Tiger Style: Black Tiger III (0/6)
2. Brawler: Luke James (0/6)

It's all bunched up as one would expect after the first round. This weekend, two more matches will begin to separate the wheat from the chaff as we continue our quest to determine the Ultimate Style of Professional Wrestling!

AWL Supercard Tag Matsuri 2016 by AWLBoss
AWL Super Card Tag Matsuri 2016 Part 2 of 2 by AWLBoss

Full Card for the Tag Matsuri

Ok folks, we're less than 24 hours away from our autumn Super Card event, the 2016 Tag Matsuri. That means that it's time for some last minute news.

The opening matches featuring the debuts of our two newest tag teams have been confirmed. Each of the debuting rookie teams will face established AWL wrestlers each with 1 point.
That means the full card for the event is as follows:
AWL SUPER CARD:
Tag Matsuri 2016!
MAIN EVENT:
The Destroyers of DOOM! (C) vs. ???? (Winners of the Tag Gauntlet) (3)
AWL World Tag Team Championship Match
5th Title Defense

2016 Tag Team Gauntlet Match!
To be contested to 3 Points

SPICY Black vs. Tiny & X
GRUDGE MATCH!

The Empire (Debut) (0) vs. The All Americans (1)

Liga Cosmica (Debut) (0) vs. Shin Jidai (1)

So now we know the British team are "The Empire" and the Mexican team are "Liga Cosmica" or "The Cosmic League." Nothing else about these teams has been revealed, nor has the identity of Tiny's tag team partner in his Grudge Match. You'll have to tune in tomorrow to the Tag Matsuri to learn more.

Lastly, since the Tag Matsuri is such a big event (and tag gauntlets tend to go on a bit) this event will be split into two videos.

Tag Matsuri Update

I know I promised interviews from several of the wrestlers involved in AWL 186 this weekend, but I have to push that until tomorrow. The news has just come dowm from the AWL Commissioner's office that a match has been announced for the 2016 Tag Matsuri on September 22nd:
Spicy Black vs. Tiny & ????
Tag Team Grudge Match
That means no countouts, no DQ, and NO TAGS!! That's right, tornado rules! This all stems from the series of out-of-competition incidents between Tiny and Curry Man SPICY that started back at AWL 180 last season. As this is a Grudge Match, no points in the AWL Tag Team division will be on the line and the match will not be recorded in the official AWL Win-Loss Records. Butthese two former friends will have the freedom to...er...work out their issues...in the ring in a fair fight.

That makes 5 matches for next Thursday's Super Card:
AWL Super Card—Tag Matsuri 2016!
Destroyers of DOOM! (C) vs. ???? (Winners of the Tag Gauntlet)
AWL World Tag Team Championship Match
5th Title Defense

2016 AWL Tag Team Gauntlet!
Match to be contested to 3 Points

Spicy Black vs. Tiny & ????
Tag Team Grudge Match

And TWO brand new international tag teams will debut!

7 matches on Sunday, 5 matches on Thursday, this is going to be the biggest and busiest week in AWL History!!

Huge Announcements!

I have a couple of huge announcements today. These are straight off the printer from the AWL Commissioner himself!

First, the annual Tag Matsuri has been formally announced for Thursday September 22nd (a national holiday here in Japan) at the AWL Arena in Tokyo. The featured attraction will be the annual Tag Team Gauntlet Match. All registered tag teams are welcome to compete and the winners will be the first team to obtain 3 points.

Additionally, the AWL Commissioner has traveled far and wide to find two new tag teams to debut at the Tag Matsuri. One from the UK and one from Mexico. These are fresh young teams that you haven't seen wrestle anywhere else, so please look forward to seeing them debut in the Animated Wrestling League.

Now the second announcement is even bigger in my opinion. At the end of this season we will celebrate AWL 200! So the Commissioner has spared no expense in bringing us back to the biggest arena in Tokyo, the mecca of Japanese sports, the place we sold out last time we were there for AWL 100...The TOKYO DOME!!!

Last time we were in the dome, Matt Classic Sr. retired at AWL World's Heavyweight Champion, Shin Tora became Tiger Mask II, and none other than A.J. Styles became AWL Light Heavyweight Champion. I can only imagine what will happen this time.

Tomorrow, the full card for AWL 185.

Commissioner's Weekly Address

Good evening ladies and gentlemen, I am the AWL Commissioner.

This week I am as excited as I have been in a long time. Not only do we have an intreging main event for Sunday's AWL 153 event, but this Monday, Oct. 12 will be the next AWL Super Card: Tag Matsuri 2015! I shall announce the full card for that special event tomorrow, but the main event should be.....amusing.
For Tag Matsuri 2015:
MAIN EVENT
Bullet Club (C) vs. ???? (3 or 4)
AWL World Tag Team Championship Match
2nd Title Defense

The challengers shall be decided the previous evening at AWL 153:
For AWL 153:
Bullet Club (Omega/Hall) (0) vs. Los Neko Grande (1)
3 Point/20 Minute Match

I am fully aware of Bullet Club's little plan to ruin my tag team division and I have no intention of letting it happen. If Mr. Hall and Mr. Omega win their match on Sunday, they WILL cash in their points on Monday. Of course, the same shall apply to Los Neko Grande.

However, I am, under the appropriate circumstances, more than willing to grant the requests of my wrestlers. In this case it amuses me to grant the request of that disrespectful little snot El Rudo Rojo. But do not blame me if you wind up in the hospital or (heaven forfend) unable to defend your title next week.
For AWL 153:
El Rudo Rojo vs. Captain AWL
GRUDGE MATCH
Finally, and I apologize for holding such significant news until the end, but I am hereby suspending the AWL Best 4 for the remainder of the season! The current Best 4 is:

1. Dragon
2. Luke James
3. Big Ben Nelson
4. RAINMAKER Okada

And before anyone asks, I was required to add Okada to the Best 4 as an apology to New Japan Pro Wrestling over that whole A.J. Style affair.

The AWL Best 4 shall be renewed in Season 9 and shall apply to the soon to be created AWL Grand Championship. The first members of this new Best 4 shall be determined by...The New Year's Tournament!

THIS! I have COMMISSIONED!!!!!!!!!!!!! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

--XOXO AWL Commissioner

Next Super Card Announced!

With AWL 150 in the history books, I think this is a good time to announce the next AWL Super Card!
AWL Super Card: Tag Matsuri 2015!
Date: Monday October 12th
Place: AWL Arena (Tokyo)
NO POINTS MAY BE LOST DURING THE TAG MATSURI

While I can't announce any specific matches, I can announce that the AWL World Tag Team Championship is set to be defended in the main event (the only time this season where that will be the case). If no team has the necessary 3 Points, a #1 contender will be determined during the matsuri itself.

Additionally, the annual Tag Team Gauntlet will be held once again. 2 teams will begin, another will enter as soon as one team is defeated, and the match will continue until one team has 3 Points (with each fall awarding a point). It's the one night a year where a team can go from nothing to #1 Contenders in one fell swoop.

I'm sure more will be announced as we get closer to the event. So stay tuned!

Yarina's issued another press release (sorry).

The title pretty much says it all.  The CEO of Yarina Talent Management Inc. has sent another press release for me to regurgitate at you.  Apologies in advance.

From the offices of Yarina Talent Management Incorporated:
Despite the AWL office's clearly slanderous statements about our organization and the AWL Commissioner's unfair ultimatum, our company has never been stronger.  At AWL 103, Crisis Gundan will defeat the two random singles wrestlers that have been thrown together for no reason.

After retaining the AWL World Tag Team Championships, our client Super Giant will become #1 contender to the AWL World Light Heavyweight Championship.  He will then make world wide wrestling headlines by defeating the IWGP Heavyweight Champion A.J. Styles for the AWL World Light Heavyweight Championship.  We expect that this future victory will open doors for us in New Japan Pro Wrestling.

Finally, YTM Inc. is proud to present the Main Event of AWL 120, the Season 6 Finale.  In the finals of the AWL Championship Tournament, Wonder Kid will face Jack "Breakdown" Butcher to crown the next AWL World's Heavyweight Champion.

As a response to the AWL Commissioner's ridiculous pronouncement regarding the championships, at the beginning of Season 7, the championships will be rebranded in the following manner:

AWL World Heavyweight Championship:
YTM World Super Heavyweight Championship

AWL World Tag Team Championship:
YTM Tag Team Championship

AWL World Light Heavyweight Championship:
YTM Mini Championship

It's time for the 2014 Tag Matsuri! (Or it will be this weekend)

At the end of every summer, the AWL holds a little event to celebrate the art and awesomeness that is tag team wrestling.  It's the AWL Tag Matsuri!  For those of you who don't know, matsuri (祭) means "festival" in Japanese.  In the past, we've had tag team tournaments, tag team debuts, and tag team title matches.

Before we get to this year's festivities, let us review the current standings in the 3 point system:

Dragon & Ganba: 2 points.
Masters of the Mask: 1 point.
Dragon & James: 1 point.
A.J. Styles & Ma-Ji-Ku: 1 point.
All other teams: 0 points.

So not a lot of points in the system at the moment.  But that will change by this time next week.

First, there will be a tag team match at AWL Mid Week Wrestling tomorrow.  Dragon and Ganba will compete for their 3rd point against The New Classics.  IF Ganba and Dragon win that match, they will challenge for the titles at AWL 103.

AWL Mid-Week Wrestling will be posted tomorrow.  I'll be back the following day with the full line up for AWL 103: Tag Matsuri 2014!
