New Champions and NEW TIGERS!

Last weekend at National Pro Wrestling Day, the Tiger Brothers finally earned their stripes when they became the AWL World’s Tag Team Champions by defeating The New Classics in an incredible tag team match.  What next for the new champions?  I asked Tiger Mask II on the plane ride back to Japan for some clarification on what happens next.  At least, I tried:

Last weekend at National Pro Wrestling Day, the Tiger Brothers finally earned their stripes when they became the AWL World’s Tag Team Champions by defeating The New Classics in an incredible tag team match.  What next for the new champions?  I asked Tiger Mask II on the plane ride back to Japan for some clarification on what happens next.  At least, I tried:

Tiger Mask II:
I’m sorry Ryu, but I can’t talk about it.  All I can say is that there are ceremonies to conduct and traditions to be observed.  But you can tell the fans that they won’t be seeing the Tiger Brothers for a while.  But they will be more than ready when it comes time to defend their championships.

So, the new AWL World’s Tag Team Champions are on hiatus from the AWL until the next tag team earns three points.  That makes it as good a time as any to take a look at the standings:
3 Points:
None.
2 Points:
T49P, Tiger Mask II & Okada, Nippon Yokatta (Yamada Jiro & “Liger”).
1 Point:
Puro Sentai Resurangers, Nippon Yokatta (Yamada Jiro & Hasaiki), Nippon Yokatta (“Liger” & Hifumi Ryuji), Dorei Corps (DB-02 & H-03), The Golden School of the Tiger Style (Inactive due to Shin Tiger Jr. being champion).

That’s it.  I’m sure the AWL Commissioner will give some deserving AWL Wrestlers the chance to become the new AWL Intercontinental Champion as soon as the start of season craziness dies down.  Until then we are represented by HAKAISHA, Hassan, and Kid Canada.  We could certainly do worse.

See you tomorrow for the grand return of the Animated Wrestling League!

Back to Business

Everyone here at the Animated Wrestling League is extremely sorry about the hiatus last week. One of these days we're going to learn not to do things like try to produce 4 hours of wrestling in a week. We've got most of the problems sorted out now (though we're still having some problems with the production equipment) and we're ready to move forward.

AWL 187 is scheduled for this Sunday Japan time and the full card will be announced tomorrow. But before that, we have some house keeping to do:

1. By order of the AWL Commissioner and due to his victory over Mahou Crusher at AWL 186, Ma-Ji-Ku is hereby named to the AWL Best 4 and Mahou Crusher is reduced by one rank. The AWL Best 4 now looks like this:

#1. Usagi Kick
#2. Mahou Crusher
#3. Project Tetsu
#4. Ma-Ji-Ku

2. After the Tag Matsuri, the AWL Tag Team Division looks like this:

AWL World's Tag Team Champions:
The Destroyers of DOOM!

Tag Team Rankings:
The All Americans: 2 Points.
Spicy Black: 2 Points.
The Empire: 2 Points.
Liga Cosmica: 2 Points.

The New Classics: 1 Point.
RUZAI: 1 Point.
Shin Jidai (Wyvern & Matt Classic Jr.): 1 Point

All other teams: 0 Points.

I don't remember a time we had that many teams with points on the board and we've NEVER had 4 teams with two points. Before the Tag Matsuri, the Destroyers of DOOM asked for more competition.....and they're going to get it!

3. The AWL Clash of Styles Tournament is underway. This Sunday represents the start of the second round of matches in the round robin tournament. Here are the current standings:

1. Lucha Libre: Ma-Ji-Ku (2/6)
1. Hardcore: Tanaka Kenichi (2/6)
1. Specialists: Sammy Nix (2/6)
1. Powerhouse: HAKAISHA! (2/6)

2. Strong Style: Yamada Jiro (0/6)
2. Technical: Kid Canada (0/6)
2. Tiger Style: Black Tiger III (0/6)
2. Brawler: Luke James (0/6)

It's all bunched up as one would expect after the first round. This weekend, two more matches will begin to separate the wheat from the chaff as we continue our quest to determine the Ultimate Style of Professional Wrestling!

Happy middle of the week Wrestling Fans! Despite technical difficulties, we have a NEW AWL IC Champion in Jack Butcher. DANGER ZONE

For the TL;DR crowd out there (you illiterate shmucks), we have three new and untested champions. Virtually nobody has points on the board in the tag division. And American Beetle's success last weekend has raised him from dead last to second from last in the Win-Loss Rankings. While still in the Danger Zone, there're only two losses separating 1 from 4, so anything could still happen!

News dump.

I'm sorry for the lack of regular posts this week, but the real world has been making unusual demands of my time the last few weeks. Fortunately that should all clear itself up soon. Hopefully, I should be able to break some VERY big news for the AWL in the coming weeks.

We start off today with a brand new edition of AWL: By the Numbers.

AWL Grand Championship:
Champion: Wyvern
Length of Reign: 40 Days (Since 02/07/2016)
Title Defenses: 1

AWL Best 4:
1. Wolf
2. Wonder Kid
3. Project
4. HAKAISHA!

AWL World Tag Team Championship:
Champions: Bullet Club (Bad Luck Fale & Karl Anderson)
Length of Reign: 208 Days (Since 08/23/2015)
Title Defenses: 5

Point System:
El Rudo Rojo & Jon Shina: 3 Points!
The New Classics: 2 Points
The All Americans: 1 Point
D.O.D: 1 Point
All other teams: 0 Points

AWL Intercontinental Championship:
Champion: Hassan (Since 12/06/2015)
Length of Reign: Days
Title Defenses: 3/5

Now for today's news. The AWL Commissioner has released the full card for this weekend's show.
AWL 166:
Main Event:
Bullet Club (C) vs. El Rudo Rojo and Jon Shina (3)
AWL World Tag Team Championship Match
6th Title Defense
Yes, you read that correctly. Two of the biggest losers in the AWL and regular features of Batsumania are the #1 contenders for the tag team titles and our current best hope to wrestle those belts away from Bullet Club. In related news, the devil is skating to work.

Chiba Akagi vs. Prince Puma
IC #1 Contender's Match
A clash of styles as the young submission's expert faced the future of lucha libre. The winner will face the seemingly insurmountable Hassan in the Arab American Dream's 4th title defense.

Wolf vs. E.N. Hance
What does the AWL Commissioner have against Mr. Hance? Does Hance owe him money or sleep with his sister or something?

The New Classics (2) vs. Mr. Smiles and George Fraser (0
Points in Play
The AWL Commissioner is...less than confident... in the ability of the challengers to get the job done in the main event. So the longest running and most decorated tag team in AWL history are facing two guys who not only have never teamed together before, neither of them have ever won a match! If I may be forgiven fore editorializing for a moment, I don't like that the AWL Commissioner (who is supposed to provide a fair and level playing field) is making obviously biased matches like this. But the tag team title situation is so severe that I can understand the application of the old cliche about desperate times calling for desperate measures.
