Day 4: Lucha vs. Libre.
Today
we get serious. Today we talk about a
match that will alter the course of two young lives. Today we talk about a match that has been
years in the making. Today we talk about
Lucha vs. Libre: Mask vs. Mask.
As
anyone who knows anything about Mexican wrestling will tell you, the mask is of
vital importance to any luchador. It is
his identity, a reflection of his personality, a piece of his very soul. To lose one’s mask is the ultimate
dishonor. If your mask is removed in a
sanctioned Lucha de Apuesas like the
one that will be held this Sunday, not only may you never wear that mask again,
you must reveal your true name and identity.
Literally everything that you have worked for your entire career is
flushed down the toilet by a single pin fall, submission, or knockout. That is what will happen at AWL 60. One man WILL lose his mask and a great secret
of BOTH men will be revealed.
Let
me explain. Back in Season 1, Lucha and
Libre debuted in the AWL as a tag team called “The Free Fighters.” Obviously, “Lucha” and “Libre” are fake names
and a not horribly clever pun on Luchalibre,
the Spanish term for Mexican pro wrestling.
While the AWL Commissioner apparently knows the real names of these two
brothers, all the rest of us know is that they are the youngest sons of a
famous Mexican wrestling star and that their family have been technicos for generations.
That’s
why Libre feels so betrayed by Lucha turning rudo and starting the N.R.E.
That’s why Libre challenged his brother to the best of seven series in
the first place and why he is now willing to risk his mask to teach his brother
a lesson.
At
AWL 60 we will finally know the real names of one of the brothers and therefore
the true lineage of the other.
There
is change in the air and the world of the AWL will never be the same
again. Tune in this Sunday for AWL 60
and be a witness to history.
