Full card for AWL 123

It should come as no surprise that American Beetle has accepted the challenge of Yamada Jiro. That, combined with a couple of announcements from the AWL Commissioner's office, means that we now know the full card for AWL 123. First, the biggest announcement:

All matches at AWL 123 must be won by pinfall.

Why is this? Because the episode number is 123 of course. OK, so it's not a great idea, but the AWL Commissioner always pays me on time so who am I to judge?

With that, on to the card:

Main Event:
The Augments (2) vs. Dragon & James (2)
Battle for 3 Points!

Prince Puma vs. The DOOMBUNNY
Champion vs. Champion
Non-Title Match

Jack Butcher (#1) vs. HAKAISHA! (#2)
Rank at Stake

American Beetle vs. Yamada Jiro

Vacant vs. Jon Shina

The opinions expressed.....

Well, at least he's honest.

A little inside information. When ever the AWL hires either a new wrestler or a new member of staff, we have to go through an orientation. One of the things that gets hammered into us is the fact that the AWL is an equal opportunity employer. And around here, that's not just the usual "please don't sue us" corporate line. The powers that be in the Animated Wrestling League make it VERY clear that all races, nationalities, religions, identities, and wrestling styles are welcome in the AWL.

However, freedom of speech and expression is completely worthless if it only applies to speech with which you agree.

It is in that spirit that we present to you, completely unedited, an e-mail sent to us by AWL rookie Yamada Jiro:

And now, the English translation:
Fighting spirit and the soul of the warrior has been the heart of the Japanese man for centuries. It touches every day of our lives. From the food we eat to the way we work. It is the beginning and end of what it means to be Japanese. Puroresu begin in 1951 with my hero Rikidouzan and while the sport may have been invented in other countries, like baseball, it was the Japanese who perfected it and raised it to the level of art.

But an infection has come to Japan. Our nation is sick. The disease is called the West. The uncultured foreigners that we once removed from the country by force now live among us. They live in our neighborhoods, shop in our shops, ride our trains, and even send their filthy children to our schools. Our government even makes our children learn THEIR pointless language!

The demon of westernization has now taken root in puroresu. Of course, we've always had the occasional gaijin wrestler on our cards, but in the past they were kept in their place along with the midgets and women. Now men like A.J. Styles and Rich Swann hold top championships. The Bullet Club spreads their cheating western ways. Even their bastard puroresu WWE is on our television!

It must stop. It will stop. I will stop it. The AWL has too many gaijin and I will remove them. This weekend I will begin with American Beetle.

Champion vs. Champion!

HUGE match signed for AWL 123!

The AWL Commissioner has personally spoken to both Konnan and Dario Cueto to set up a Champion vs. Champion rematch this weekend:

Prince Puma vs. The DOOMBUNNY

During the 2015 AWL お正月大会, these two animal avatars met in battle.  It was an opening round match and the Lucha Underground Champion was victorious in that encounter.  Now the pride of the Animated Wrestling League is at stake as our Light Heavyweight Champion faces the current King of The Temple.  It'll be the grace and power of the puma verses the speed and wits of the rabbit at AWL 123.

Punishments galore!

Well, this has been the definition of a fun weekend. If I never see another meeting room it'll be too soon. But enough complaining about my work life, time for the news.

The reason the entire AWL staff has been in non-stop meetings all weekend is what we have not one, not two, but THREE controversies coming out of AWL 122. The following announcements come directly from the AWL Commissioner's office.

Wonder Kid:
For the first time in AWL history, a competitor has no-showed an event and been forced to forfit their scheduled match. First of all, allow me to reassure any of you who might be worried for Wonder Kid's health, he's fine. AWL office staff were finally able to get a hold of Wonder Kid on his cell phone late last night. I was not privy to the conversation, but I have been told that Wonder Kid's health is not an issue.

Obviously, the AWL Commissioner has no choice but to punish Wonder Kid for his (in)actions. First, Wonder Kid has been fined 500,000. Second, he is suspended, without pay, until further notice. Third, he is commanded to appear in the AWL Commissioner's office this Friday to explain himself.

Jack Butcher:
In the AWL, we believe that wins and losses matter more than anything. However, the integrity of those wins are also important. At AWL 122, Jack Butcher "won" a match without actually wrestling to enter the Best 4. He then went on to win a battle royal where he was the only one who hadn't wrestled a match that night. Certain members of the roster have argued that this is unfair. And the AWL Commissioner agrees.

This is a complicated issue. On the one hand, the AWL Commissioner does not feel The Australian Assassin has earned a title shot. On the other hand, it's not fair that Butcher be punished because Wonder Kid decided to be a flake.

The compromise is this: Jack Butcher WILL remain in the AWL Best 4. However, this weekend at AWL 123, Butcher will defend his #1 rank. He will face his former tag team partner and the current #2 contender HAKAISHA!

If Butcher wins, he gets the next title shot against Ganba. If he loses, he and HAKAISHA! will swap ranks.

The Bullet Club:
After the main event of AWL 122, Bullet Club members A.J. Styles and "Machine Gun" Karl Anderson attacked the new AWL World's Heavyweight Champion Ganba from behind and left him laying. Obviously, this sort of activity is unacceptable. Currently, the Bullet Club team of Anderson and Bad Luck Fale have 1 point toward tag team title contention out of the necessary 3. The AWL Commissioner has STRIPPED the Bullet Club of their point as punishment for their actions.

That's it. A newsworthy show yesterday and a newsworthy post today. We also now know the first match for AWL 123: HAKAISHA! vs. Jack Butcher with a title shot at stake.

Stay tuned for all the news of the Animated Wrestling League.

AWL 122 Preview

The 2015 New Year's Tournament is in the history books.  The winner of the tournament, Ganba, will face A.J. Styles for the AWL World Heavyweight Championship this weekend.

But there's a LOT more scheduled for AWL 122 and it all has to do with the title picture.  After the craziness of Season 6 and the quest for a new champion, we are reestablishing the AWL Best 4!

At AWL 122, 8 wrestlers will compete in 4 matches.  6 of those men made it to the semi finals or better in the お正月大会 and the Season 6 Championship Tournament.  The final two will be wrestlers with the best win-loss records of those not already booked for the show.

The 4 winners will then compete in a battle royal to determine their rankings in the Best 4.  Therefore, the winner of the battle royal will be next in line for a title shot.

All that and a title match too!

Join us right here this weekend for AWL 122: Styles vs. Ganba!

The first round announced!

We're only a few days away from our Season 7 Premier and the biggest tournament in the Animated Wrestling League year.  In a transparent attempt to convince you to watch the show, here are the matches for round one . . . mostly.

We only know the names of 12 of the 16 wrestlers involved in the tournament this year.  We know one will be a reigning champion from outside the AWL and, this just in, I can also announce that another of the debuting wrestlers will be a brand new member of The Augments.

Now, the first round.  These match-ups were determined by random lottery.

1. ???? (New Augment)
vs.
2. Dragon

3. Wolf
vs.
4. Mike Quackenbush

5. El Rudo Rojo
vs.
6. Curry Man

7. Kid Canada
vs.
8. ????

9. Ganba
vs.
10. Wonder Kid

11. Ma-Ji-Ku
vs.
12. Luke James

13. ???? (Outside Champion)
vs.
14. The DOOMBUNNY

15. El Santo Azul
vs.
16. ????

Some interesting matches.  Obviously, what stands out most to long time AWL fans is the continuation of the longest running rivalry in AWL history: Ganba vs. Wonder Kid.  With 7 AWL World Titles between them, these two have been locking horns ever since Season 0 and now they will meet again with a title shot on the line for the tournament winner.

Also of note, the new Augment will face someone who has already been copied and "improved upon" by Dr. Jigoku, the Green Grappler, Dragon.  Who will the new Augment be based on?  We'll all find out together at AWL 121.

The AWL Arena will once again be graced by the presence of The Chikara Director of Fun, "Lighting" Mike Quackenbush.  Remember, this version of Quack is a man out of time, pulled from a point in his personal timeline before he suffered a career ending leg injury.  He will face Wolf in the first round.  These two have fought before and Quack actually beat Wolf at AWL 94 to become AWL World Heavyweight Champion.  Watch that match here.

Lastly, we are certain to have a champion vs. champion match.  The mysterious outside champion will face the man who won the AWL World Light Heavyweight Championship at AWL 120: The DOOMBUNNY!

See it all Sunday January 18th right here on AWLWrestling.blogspot.com!

明けましておめでとうございます!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR AWL FANS!

2015 is upon us and that means it's time for the 2015 お正月大会!  The 2015 New Year's Tournament.  This is the biggest event of the AWL calendar.  16 wrestlers will compete in a ONE NIGHT tournament for honor and glory
.
.
.
And a chance to become AWL World Heavyweight Champion!

That's right, this year the winner of the New Year's Tournament will get the first title shot of Season 7 against The Phenomenal A.J. Styles for the AWL World Heavyweight Championship.  That title shot will take place at AWL 122, the week after the tournament.

Also, this year we have FOUR new wrestlers debuting in the tournament rather than the usual one.  All I know right now is that one of these four will be a reigning champion from another company.  The rest of the line up, including the 1st round matches will be posted tomorrow.

Sunday January 18th, 2015 (Japan Time) is the date.
Your computer monitor is the place.
We're starting the new year and the new season off in style!
