AWL Wrestler Profile: Jose Huerta

 Jose Huerta (Formerly: Lucha)
              From: Guadalajara, Mexico.
              Record: 11-12
              Finishers: Fighter’s Finale/Guillotine Leg Drop.
              Affiliation: N.R.E./The Free Fighters (Former)
              Style: Lucha Libre.
              Championships: None
The second youngest son of lucha libre legend El Santo, Jose is the black sheep of the family.  Sure, he shares his entire clan’s passion for the wrestling industry, but his heart belongs to the devious and dastardly, the despicable and dishonorable . . . the Rudos.  Taking the name Lucha, he traveled to Japan to escape the long shadow cast by his father.  Of course, his little brother Libre wanted to earn a reputation all their own, but Lucha just wanted to get the hell away from his home and family.
Upon his arrival in the AWL, Lucha joined with his brother as “The Free Fighters” and tried to play the part of the technico.  But his true colors shone through in their tag team matches as Lucha would frequently use dirty and underhanded tactics to gain an unfair advantage behind the backs of both the referee and his brother.
Eventually, the Free Fighters broke up after Lucha nearly broke his brother’s skill with a steel chair.  Finally “free” of his family, Lucha went about forging a new family.  A family of evil composed of those in the AWL who are not only heels/rudos/villains/whatever, but are PROUD of that fact.  He found two new brothers in Bruce Hoyt and Wrestler X, an excessively violent cheater and a shameless thief respectfully.
Together, the N.R.E. blazed a trail of destruction through the AWL, eventually adding attempted murderer Bubba Reese to their number, but Lucha’s march of madness was stopped by one man . . . his baby brother.
Libre (occasionally aided by Ma-Ji-Ku & Ganba) challenged Lucha to a Best of 7 Series.  At first, Lucha assumed this was a joke and didn’t take his brother seriously as an opponent.  However, Lucha eventually found himself up against the wall when the series was tied at 3-3 and Libre (Per the rules of the contest) chose a Mask vs. Mask match as the stakes for their final encounter.  Jose was defeated in that contest after AWL senior referee Joey Babaganoush declared him knocked out after a Standing Star Press.  Jose became the first wrestler in this history of the AWL to be unmasked.

Only time will tell if Jose can recover from the humiliation, but something tells me that we haven’t seen the last of the Red Rudo.

AWL Wrestler Profile: Libre

 Libre
              From: Guadalajara, Mexico.
              Record: 12-17
              Finisher: Freedom’s Wing/Final Flight/ Standing Star Splash.
Affiliation: Masters of the Mask/The Free Fighters (Former)
              Style: Lucha Libre.
Championships: AWL World Tag Team Title x1 (w/ Masters of the Mask)
A young practitioner of the Mexican wrestling style known as Lucha Libre, this young man and his brother came to the AWL to hone their craft and to “pay their dues” in professional wrestling.  As a second generation wrestler, Libre deliberately choose an obviously fake ring name so as to avoid any potential nepotism due to his famous father.
Coming into the AWL as a tag team wrestler, Libre and his brother also joined with Ma-Ji-Ku to form Team Mexico in the 2012 W.W.E. Tournament.  While they were unsuccessful, Libre forged a friendship with Ma-Ji-Ku that planted the seeds for their future as The Masters of the Mask.  It was that pairing that won Libre his first and so far only taste of AWL Gold as one half of the AWL World Tag Team Champions.
During the 2012 New Year’s Tournament, Libre made a name for himself as a singles star by defeating Curry Man in an impressive first round match and holding his own against super heavyweight Warrior in the second round.  This led to Libre being given a host of new opportunities as a singles wrestler.  Unfortunately, his brother Lucha became jealous of his little brother and all of this culminated in Lucha smashing his baby brother in the face with a steel chair while “Helping” him in a match against Shin Tora.

Libre saw Lucha’s rudo-like actions as an insult to the family honor.  After suffering a defeat at his brother’s hands at AWL 40, Libre challenged his brother to a Best of Seven Series that concluded at AWL 60 in a Mask vs. Mask match.  Libre inflicted the ultimate karmic justice upon his brother, but at the same time revealed one of his own greatest secrets: He is the youngest son . . . of El Santo!

AWL Wrestler Profile: Lee Masters

 “Penultimate Fighter” Lee Masters
From: Minneapolis, MN.  Now living in Las Vegas, NV.
              Record: 12-14
Finisher: Whatever Works.
              Affiliation: The Technicos.
              Style: MMA
Championships: AWL World Tag Team Titles x2
It seems like every wrestling company has one of these nowadays.  The failed (I’m sorry, “up and coming”) MMA guy that decides for whatever reason to try his hand at professional wrestling.  Lee Masters is ours.  Having trained in Mixed Martial Arts for about 2 years before coming to Japan to try and seek his fortune in one of the many small time fighting organizations that exist in this country, Lee soon discovered that he had spent $800 on a one way plane ticket for nothing more than a slightly subsidized ass kicking.
Fortunately for Masters, the AWL Commissioner was looking to expand his rapidly growing wrestling company and its nascent tag team division.  Fortunately, this was long before the AWL was even on YouTube, much less in its current form so the fast majority of you never saw such “Legendary” tag teams as Dan Dynamo & Mr. Showtime, the Battle Brothers, or Drag & Dream (the only combination of a pre and post op transsexual in pro wrestling history).  But one team that stood out as having potential to become future stars were The Young Lions, Lee Masters and his partner (believe it or not) “Wild Card” Bubba Reese.
As you can imagine, The Young Lions quickly broke up.  Lee tried bringing his brother Sam in as a new tag team partner but that didn’t work out either.  Lee Masters floundered around the midcard for a while until Matt Classic began his quest to assemble the best technical wrestlers in the AWL for his new stable, The Technicos.  Lee was the first recruit.
During Season 1 of the AWL, the Technicos suffered from some severe teamwork issues, mostly stemming from Lee’s ego run amuck.  Eventually, his partner pounded some sense into him and The Technicos went on to become multi-time AWL World Tag Team Champions.

Oh yes, and for the last time, Lee Masters is NOT related to Chris Masters.

AWL Wrestler Profile: Kid Canada

Kid Canada
              From: Calgary . . . Alberta, Canada.
              Record: 2-3
Finisher: Code Breaker aka Canadian Crunch.
              Affiliation: Team World (Former)
              Style: Hart Style Submissions.
              Championships: None.
Sorry.  We know almost nothing about this man other than the fact that he is Canadian.  VERY Canadian.  His wrestling style, especially his love of submission holds, is somewhat similar of the style taught by the late, great, Stu Hart.  Kid Canada claims to be one of the last students to come out of The Dungeon, but nobody has been able to independently confirm that.

Since debuting in the AWL, Kid Canada’s only claim to fame was a strong performance as part of Team World in the 2012 W.W.E. Trios Tournament.

AWL Wrestler Profile: Hassan

 Hassan
From: New York City, born Bagdad, Iraq.
              Record: 16-13
              Finisher: Paradigm Shift.
              Affiliation: All Americans
              Style: American Pro Wrestling
              Championships: Tag Team x2 (w/ All Americans)/Anarchy Title x1
Most AWL fans know Hassan’s story.  He was born in Bagdad during the reign of Saddam Husain.  At great personal risk to life and liberty, his parents managed to smuggle the family out of Iraq and to the land of opportunity, the United States of America.  After arriving in New York City, the family lived the happy lives of hundreds of immigrant families before them.  Hard work, struggles to adapt to their new home, but a fierce pride and sense of patriotism that can only be found in those who became American by choice.
Young Hassan became a fan of the American art form known as professional wrestling when he was still in grade school.  Upon reaching adult hood, he enrolled in medical school as per his parents’ wishes, but took the “Living allowance” granted to him by the student loan sharks and invested in wrestling school.  After a few years of bouncing around the U.S. independent scene desperately looking for anyone who would book him as anything other than an “Iron Sheik” type foreign heel he started to become disillusioned with the business.
Eventually, he found himself attending a Kaiju Big Battel show where he caught the eye of American Beetle.  AmB was looking for a partner to bring to Japan and go after the AWL World Tag Team Championship.  Together as The All Americans, Hassan and American Beetle have proven themselves MORE than worthy of being considered one of the top tag teams in not only the AWL, but all of professional wrestling today.
In addition to his two Tag Team titles and one Anarchy title, Hassan has literally come within seconds of being AWL World Heavyweight Champion on more than one occasion.

There is no telling what the future holds for this young fighter, but one thing is certain.  Step into the ring with Hassan and you will face a Paradigm Shift.

AWL Wrestler Profile: Ganba

Ganba
              From: Tokyo, Japan.
              Record: 16-7
              Finisher: Ishokenmei/Ganba Kani.
              Affiliation: None.
              Style: Japanese Strong Style
Championships: AWL World Title x2/AWL Anarchy Title x1/AWL World Tag Team x1.
The quintessential Japanese hero of the squared circle.  Ganba (who takes his ring name from the ubiquitous Japanese expression “ganbatte” or “Do your best”) is the personification of the world famous Japanese work ethic.  Deciding at a young age that he wanted to be a professional wrestler, Ganba dove into everything to do with the sport.  He not only studied tape of every wrestling match he could get his hands on, he made a point of learning every mainstream fighting style he could.
When he finally came of age, he left home and went to any Japanese pro wrestling dojo that would take him.  Modeling his style on Japanese legends Antonio Inoki and the Original Tiger Mask, Ganba’s wrestling style seamlessly blends high impact power wrestling and the high speed junior heavyweight style.
When he first came to the AWL, Ganba came into immediate conflict with those wrestlers who had NO sense of style or technique, first with Wolf and then with Wonder Kid.  In fact, it was Ganba (after winning that year’s New Year’s Tournament) that ended Wonder Kid’s first and so far longest title reign.  This sparked a rivalry that continues to this day.

But Ganba would meet his greatest enemy in an unexpected place: A parking lot miles away from the AWL Arena.  That is where “Wild Card” Bubba Reese, enraged with jealousy at being leapfrogged by Ganba in the AWL Best 4, would ambush Ganba mere hours before a scheduled title match with then World Champion Matt Classic.  Injuries from that attack put Ganba on the shelf for half a season and he has never fully recovered.  Ganba and Reese have been out for each other’s blood ever since.

AWL Wrestler Profile: Dragon

Dragon
              From: Chiba, Japan.
              Record: 12-11
              Finisher: Dragon Drop.
              Affiliation: None.
              Style: Master of All Styles.
Championships: AWL World Champion x2 (1st)
The first wrestler ever hired by the AWL and our first Champion.  Dragon was born in the United States and suffers from an . . . unusual genetic condition that causes him to not only have green skin (that’s not makeup if you were wondering), enhanced stamina, and seemingly a slow aging process (he looks the same today as he did when he first joined the company).
Dragon grew up in a loving household and, despite being severely bullied at school, led a relatively normal life. But Dragon found that there are relatively few job opportunities in the world for someone who looks like him.  So he joined up with the modern day circus: Professional Wrestling.  Determined not to be pigeonholed as a “Freak” or “Sideshow” wrestler, Dragon dedicated himself to learning every single faced of the mat game.  As a result, he became a true all-around athlete inside the ring.  Brawling, high flying, submission, mat wrestling, he can do it all.  It was this perfect combination of talent that drew the eye of a young AWL Commissioner when he was looking for someone to build his new promotion around.
Dragon became such a leader in the AWL locker room that it became a tradition for a few years to have every debuting wrestler in the AWL face Dragon in their first match (affectionately known as the Dragon Debut Series) so Dragon could test them and see if they measured up to the gold standard of animated wrestling.

Fast forward nearly 13 years later and Dragon is still going strong in the AWL.  He wrestles a part time schedule these days and likes to focus on helping the younger wrestlers improve their game.  To that end he took young Luke James under his wing and taught him many of the ins and outs of being a professional wrestler.  Even with the part time schedule, Dragon’s history, skill, and commanding presence make him a perennial contender for the AWL World Heavyweight Title.

AWL Wrestler Profile: Curry Man

 Curry Man
              From: Osaka, Japan.
              Record: 6-9
              Finisher: Spice Rack
Affiliation: Big & Spicy/Team Japan (Former)
              Style: Sports Entertainment
Championships: 2012 WWE Tournament Winner (Team Japan)
Curry Man 一番!!!! Or so he says anyway.  Curry Man is easily one of the strangest individuals in the Animated Wrestling League (and that’s saying something).  A long time AWL veteran, the “King of Spice” combines a unique blend of the Japanese Junior Heavyweight Style of wrestling with almost cartoonish antics and mind games more at home in 1989 WWF.  He claims to be a Japanese native of Osaka and chalks his antics up to the ancient tradition of Osaka comedians.  However, one only needs to listen to him try to speak Japanese to realize he’s about as Japanese as Bob Sapp.

While he has never held gold in the AWL, he still wears the gold medal he won in the 2012 W.W.E. Tournament (and the ugly ring jacket he bought with his prize money).  He recently formed a tag team with Tiny called “Big & Spicy.”  Together, they are on a long quest for the AWL World Tag Team Titles, but standing in their way are two humanoid monsters: Crisis Gundan!

AWL Wrestler Profile: "Wild Card" Bubba Reese

 “Wild Card” Bubba Reese
              From: The 1990’s.
              Record: 4-10
              Finisher: The Vertibraker
              Affiliation: Wild Pack (Former)/THE (Former)/Hardcore Throwbacks (Former)/N.R.E.
              Style: Hardcore
Championships: Tag Team x2 (w/Wild Pack & THE)

Bubba Reese is a monster, pure and simple.  Brought up on the blood and gore of late 90’s garbage wrestling, he took one look at guys like New Jack and Sandman and said “Yeah, I want to do that.”  For years, Reese was considered a harmless eccentric making a living as a pro wrestler.  All that changed forever at AWL 21, when Reese attacked Ganba outside the AWL Arena injuring him severely and nearly ending his career.  At AWL 40, Ganba got his much needed revenge in the first ever Hell in the Cell Match in the AWL.  Reese dropped off the radar for a while after that until he reappeared as a member of the N.R.E.  Now he brings his unique brand of mindless violence to the stable of proud villains, but Ganba is back on his tail and will not let him go unpunished for his crimes.

AWL Wrestler Profile: Bruce Hoyt

“Boxing Bastard” Bruce Hoyt
              From: Dallas, TX.
              Record: 12-12
              Finisher: One Punch Knockout
              Affiliation: N.R.E./The Best (Former)
              Style: Boxing
              Championships: Light Heavyweight Title x1
A former professional boxer, he was considered a future title contender in the WBC and WBA.  Unfortunately, that dream came to a crashing halt when Hoyt’s temper kept getting the best of him during his matches.  Eventually, he couldn’t get booked anywhere because nobody wanted to fight him due to his unsportsmanlike conduct.  With nothing else to fall back on, he went into professional wrestling where the AWL Commissioner quickly saw his potential and signed him to a contract.
The Commissioner’s faith proved well placed as Hoyt eventually rose to the top of his division as AWL Light Heavyweight Champion.  Unfortunately, he would make his biggest impact on the AWL by LOSING that title to the man who has held it ever since, Ma-Ji-Ku.

Since his defeat, he has not only challenged for the Light Heavyweight Title multiple times (each attempt a failure) but has branched out into the tag team division.  First, he fought as part of “The Best” with Rick Flare and now as a member of the N.R.E.  He has never held the AWL World Tag Team Titles.

AWL Wrestler Profile: Black Tiger King

 Black Tiger King
              From: Parts Unknown.
              Record: 7-4
              Finisher: Black Tiger Driver
              Affiliation: None
              Style: Tiger Style
              Championships: 2013 New Year’s Tournament.

Black Tiger King is a former student of the Tiger Style Dojo and classmate of AWL wrestler Tiger Mask V.  Inflamed with jealousy over not being selected to become the new Tiger Mask, he adopted the mantle of Black Tiger (With his ego demanding that he tack on the King part for good measure). Debuting in the AWL in 2013, he quickly made a name for himself by winning the 2013 New Year’s Tournament and set his sights on his nemesis, Tiger Mask.

AWL Wrestler Profile: "Big" Ben Nelson

 “Big” Ben Nelson
              From: Liverpool, UK.
              Record: 5-7
              Finisher: Big Ben Bash/Rue Britannia
              Affiliation: Team UK
              Style: British Wrestling
              Championships: None

A relative new comer to the AWL, Ben Nelson was a "career" pub brawler in Liverpool and was recruited by Striker and Fit Finley to join Team UK during the 2012 W.W.E. Trios Tournament.  He quickly found his footing as a technically proficient power wrestler and maintained a successful tag team with Striker under the Team UK banner after the W.W.E. ended.  He also made a name for himself in the 2013 New Year’s Tournament by advancing to the semi-finals defeating Silver Potato and Lucha.  A bad run-in with Crisis Gundan put him on the shelf temporarily and ended the career of Striker.  Now, he’s trying to make his way as a singles wrestler whilst trying to find a way to avenge his fallen friend.

AWL Wrestler Profile: American Beetle.

American Beetle
From: The United States of America.
              Record: 11-16
              Finisher: Beetle Bomb
Affiliation: The All Americans/Team USA (former)
              Style: Boxing/American Wrestling
Championships: AWL World Tag Team Championship x2 (w/ Hassan)
He is the anthropomorphic personification of the American Spirit.  American Beetle is the epitome of everything the United States of America should be.  Kind, generous, powerful, but considerate in how he uses that power.  Through his dedication to the American art of professional wrestling, American Beetle wants to show the world what it truly means to be an American.

Coming to the AWL from Kaiju Big Battel, AmB (as he is sometimes known) is the reigning Kaiju Grand Champion and a member of Team Hero.  While he does not have a great win-loss record in the AWL, he is a former multi-time AWL Tag Team Champion and has challenged for the Anarchy and Light Heavyweight Championships several times.

Huge News Post!

Hello Internet!
AWL Commentator, web master, and general Do-most-of-the-work-guy RyuSensei here with breaking news regarding the AWL including news on Season 4 and how we are going to fill ti…er…provide bonus content during the rest of the off season.  There’s a lot of news to get to so let’s go by the numbers:

1. You did it!  Yes you, the AWL fans, have out done yourselves once again.  As of this writing, we have once AGAIN surpassed our previous monthly record number of page views here at AWLWrestling.blogspot.com.  The new record stands at 470 views in June and the month is barely half over!  I know I say it every time, but thank you so much for all your support!

2. Beginning tomorrow there will be daily posts containing profiles of all your favorite AWL wrestlers!  These profiles will include stats and figures plus a brief history of that wrestler’s time in the AWL.  This will continue until we run out of wrestlers.

3. Lastly, I have breaking news to report for our Season 4 premier, AWL 61.  The AWL Commissioner has booked 3 matches for this show that he has given me permission to announce to you right here, right now!  They are:
Ma-Ji-Ku © vs. Libre—AWL Light Heavyweight Championship Match!
Tag team partners will face off in a match for what has become the most sought after title in the AWL.  After besting his brother Jose in the Best of 7 Series that concluded at AWL 60 in the Mask vs. Mask match, Libre has more than earned a shot at the title.  Will Ma-Ji-Ku be able to give his all against his partner and friend?  Will the champ be intimidated now that he knows Libre is the son of a bone fide Mexican legend like El Santo?

Best 4 Battle Royal: Ben Nelson, Wolf, Hassan, Matt Classic
The AWL Best 4 rankings were turned upside down after the 6-man cage match in the latter part of last season.  This is the AWL Commissioner’s way of restoring order.  A 4-man Battle Royal where the first man eliminated will take the number 4 slot, the second man number 3, and so on.  The winner of this match will face Wonder Kid in a 10 Minute Challenge at AWL 62.

And I’ve saved the best for last:

Ganba vs. Bubba Reese—Last man standing, loser leaves town!
A long blood feud that began in a parking lot before AWL 21, that continued in the first ever AWL Hell in the Cell match at AWL 40, and that was reignited by Bubba Reese joining the N.R.E., will finally come to a head at AWL 61.
Over the course of Season 3, Ganba earned himself a match of his choice with Bubba Reese by defeating every other member of the N.R.E. in single combat.  That match, which was supposed to happen at AWL 60, was postponed due to Ganba challenging for the AWL World Heavyweight Championship.
From his chosen stipulations, Ganba has shown that he is serious about whipping the stain of Bubba Reese from the AWL forever.  For those of you who may not be aware, a Last Man Standing Match means there are no rules.  The combatants fight until one of them fails to answer a referee’s 10 count.  The “loser leaves town” stipulation is exactly what it sounds like.  The loser of this match must leave the AWL . . . forever.
It’s Ganba vs. Reese for the final time at AWL 61.  This match will be the main event of the show.

The exact date for AWL 61 has yet to be set.  When it is, you’ll read about it right here on AWLWrestling.blogspot.com.
                                                                                    --RyuSensei

P.S. No news to report on the AWL Commissioner’s negotiations with Titor Conglomerate to acquire assets of Chikara Pro Wrestling.  The negotiations are ongoing.

News and Chikara

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, I am the AWL Commissioner.
On behalf of everyone here at the Animated Wrestling League, I am quite grateful to all of you for making AWL 60 the most successful event in the history of the company.  May was our best month ever in terms of views and we are within a hair of June topping that already as of this writing.
Preparations for Season 4 of the Animated Wrestling League are already underway.  Our wrestlers are using this time off to heal any nagging injuries they may have, train themselves in new wrestling techniques, and of course spend valuable time with their families and friends.

Now, it falls to me to address a most grievous issue facing the world of independent wrestling, the seeming demise of Chikara:
For those of you unaware, top American independent wrestling organization Chikara has been forcibly shut down by their parent company Worldwide Media Development Corporation, including a most unfortunate incident at their recent iPPV.  WMD Corp. and their parent company Titor Conglomerate have decided to liquidate all Chikara assets as soon as possible, essentially spelling the death of the best wrestling company in the United States.

I SAY THEE NAY!!!  This shall NOT STAND!!  As of this moment, ladies and gentlemen, the Animated Wrestling League is officially in negotiations with Titor Conglomerate to purchase any and all Chikara assets we can get our grubby little paws on.  Our company’s means may be limited, but I am willing to sink a goodly amount of my own personal fortune into this project.  Our proposal will focus primarily on the acquisition of intellectual materials and talent contracts.  I will keep you, my dear AWL fans, updated on these matters as they progress.

Until we speak again, please enjoy the off season and I speak for everyone associated with the Animated Wrestling League when I say that we hope you will join us very, very, soon for AWL 61 and Season 4.

                                                                                    --XOXO AWL Commissioner

AWL 60 Countdown: Day 5 . . . Day the Final!

Day 5: Wonder Kid vs. Ganba.
After a week of blatant hard selling of the Season 3 finale, we are less than 24 hours away and it’s time to talk about the main event.  Ganba and Wonder Kid have been rivals for years, dating back to when the AWL was on YouTube and filmed on WWF Attitude for the PS1.  It was Ganba that ended Wonder Kid’s original 364 day title reign 24 hours short of a full year.  These two AWL all-stars would trade the title back and forth in the final days before our big jump to Daily Motion.
Since then, Ganba has spent time sidelined due to injury and has been distracted by his ongoing feud with “Wild Card” Bubba Reese (Speaking of which, Ganba’s scheduled match with Reese has been postponed until next season).  The last time Ganba and Wonder Kid fought, at AWL 48, Ganba defeated Wonder Kid with a surprise modified power slam for a pin fall victory.
With Wonder Kid using the 10 Minute Challenge to avoid defending the title, Ganba knows that getting two title shots in one season is a rare blessing, one he does not intend to waste.  But you don’t have to take my word for it.
In accordance with AWL tradition, both champion and challenger in this weekend’s AWL World Heavyweight Championship Match will now be given the opportunity to make a public statement.  First, the Champion:

From the offices of Yarina Talent Management Inc.
We here at YTM Inc. are happy to announce that immediately following AWL 60, there will be an exclusive event to celebrate Wonder Kid’s first full season as AWL World Heavyweight Champion.  We have spared no expense and have reserved an entire floor of one of the most expensive hotels in Roppongi Hills.  Dine on the finest imported food and enjoy the view of both Tokyo Tower and Tokyo Skytree.  Please note, that the cost of admission to this celebration is most certainly NOT included in the price of a ticket to the AWL Arena.  An additional charge will be leveled at the door.  Formal attire required.
                                                                                                                --Yarina.

And now the challenger:
              関係ない。俺の怪我は関係ない。破壊者とリスは関係ない。俺たちの前の試合も関係ない。日曜日に俺とキッドはAWLリングに入る。勝ち一つ。負ける一つ。それだけだ!俺はいつも頑張れます!
                                                                                                  ―ガンバ
In English:
It doesn’t matter.  My injuries don’t matter.  HAKAISHA and Reese don’t matter.  Our past matches don’t matter.  This Sunday, Kid and I will enter the AWL ring.  There will be one winner.  There will be one loser.  That’s all!  I will always do my best.
                                                                                                  --Ganba

You know the matches.  You know the stakes.  You know the fighters.  Tune in to AWL 60 tomorrow to learn the results.

AWL 60 Countdown Day 4

Day 4: Lucha vs. Libre.
Today we get serious.  Today we talk about a match that will alter the course of two young lives.  Today we talk about a match that has been years in the making.  Today we talk about Lucha vs. Libre: Mask vs. Mask.
As anyone who knows anything about Mexican wrestling will tell you, the mask is of vital importance to any luchador.  It is his identity, a reflection of his personality, a piece of his very soul.  To lose one’s mask is the ultimate dishonor.  If your mask is removed in a sanctioned Lucha de Apuesas like the one that will be held this Sunday, not only may you never wear that mask again, you must reveal your true name and identity.  Literally everything that you have worked for your entire career is flushed down the toilet by a single pin fall, submission, or knockout.  That is what will happen at AWL 60.  One man WILL lose his mask and a great secret of BOTH men will be revealed.
Let me explain.  Back in Season 1, Lucha and Libre debuted in the AWL as a tag team called “The Free Fighters.”  Obviously, “Lucha” and “Libre” are fake names and a not horribly clever pun on Luchalibre, the Spanish term for Mexican pro wrestling.  While the AWL Commissioner apparently knows the real names of these two brothers, all the rest of us know is that they are the youngest sons of a famous Mexican wrestling star and that their family have been technicos for generations.
That’s why Libre feels so betrayed by Lucha turning rudo and starting the N.R.E.  That’s why Libre challenged his brother to the best of seven series in the first place and why he is now willing to risk his mask to teach his brother a lesson.
At AWL 60 we will finally know the real names of one of the brothers and therefore the true lineage of the other.

There is change in the air and the world of the AWL will never be the same again.  Tune in this Sunday for AWL 60 and be a witness to history.

AWL 60 Countdown Day 3

Crisis Gundan (C) vs. The Super Tiger Brothers: AWL World Tag Team Title Match.

This match is the very definition of the proverbial double edged sword.  On the one hand, the Super Tiger Brothers (Tiger Mask and Shin Tora) won their way into the tag title picture and saved themselves from Batsumania.  On the other hand, they now have a match with Crisis Gundan the only undefeated tag team in the AWL who has a bad habit of injuring their opponents.
We contacted the Tiger’s Cave Dojo and learned that Tiger Mask and Shin Tora are spending the week on a training retreat in the mountains of Gunma Prefecture in central Japan and were thus unavailable for comment, but it’s good to know that they are taking this opportunity at the tag team titles seriously and not just looking at their likely beating as the payment for keeping their jobs.
However, Yarina was more than willing to issue a press release (seriously, that woman never met a microphone she didn’t like).

From the offices of Yarina Talent Management Inc.
This is insulting.  Not only are the best tag team in the world today, Crisis Gundan forced to step foot in the ring with a couple of rejects from the AWL Baby Division, but they are literally the WORST WRESTLERS IN THE COMPANY!!  They should be fighting to avoid a pink slip and the know it.  This Sunday, at AWL 60, Crisis Gundan is going to literally walk all over these two kittens.  It’s going to be a very short match, but don’t expect a discount on their appearance fee.
                                                                                    --Yarina

Tune in this weekend to see if the Super Tiger Brothers can overcome the odds and become the new AWL World Tag Team Champions.

AWL 60 Countdown Day 2

Tonight we are supposed to talk about the Light Heavyweight Championship Match at AWL 60.  However, there isn't much to talk about.  Ma-Ji-Ku has been AWL Light Heavyweight Champion since November 17th 2011!

A year and a half.  18 months.

That is easily the longest title reign in ANY division in AWL history.

Unlike Wonder Kid, Ma-Ji-Ku has never dodged a challenger or tried to get out of a title match.  At AWL 60 he faces the man he won the title from in the first place all those years ago: Bruce Hoyt.

Again.

"The Boxing Bastard" Bruce Hoyt has had several chances to regain the AWL Light Heavyweight Championship and he has failed at every single one of them.  There are only so many times that the AWL Commissioner is going to let Hoyt's past glory grant him chance after chance.  So if Hoyt is going to be the first man to bring gold to the N.R.E., he is going to have to do it NOW!

Neither wrestler was available for comment at the time of this writing.  Ma-Ji-Ku politely asked me to leave when I tried to interview him.  The N.R.E. tried to kick my ass.

At AWL 60 it will be Ma-Ji-Ku vs. Bruce Hoyt for the AWL Light Heavyweight Championship probably for the last time so be there or . . . watch it later in the archives I guess.

AWL 60 Countdown Day 1.

Welcome AWL fans to the final countdown to AWL 60: The Season 3 Finale.  Before we get into hyping the show, I would like to express my gratitude to all of you.  Thanks to you, the AWL fans, May 2013 was far and away the most successful month, in terms of page views, in AWL history.  We more than doubled our previous record with 438 page views in May and we’re on pace to do it again in June.  I can think of several indy wrestling promotions that can’t draw 400+ in one month.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart.  The thought that my videos are being seen and presumably enjoyed by all of you is a source of great joy for me.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled shilling:

AWL 60 will be posted at 7am Japan time on Sunday June 9th (please adjust for your time zone).  We will proudly present 5 matches including all the AWL Championships being defended.  For the rest of this week we will be bringing you daily content all leading up to the show.  Tonight, we look at what will be the opening match: Batsumania.

Batsumaina is a new AWL exclusive concept match.  The rules are as follows:

1. Batsumania is a 4-man elimination match scheduled for 3 falls.

2. After every fall, the WINNER of the fall is eliminated from the match.

3. The man to lose the third and final fall will be immediately FIRED from the AWL.

We now bring you some comments from the four wrestlers that have been sentenced to Batsumania.

American Beetle:
My fellow Americans.  It has come to this, a former AWL World Tag Team Champion forced to fight for his life in a match named after a comedy internet video series.  But I am not dejected.  While I have no desire to add to America or Japan’s unemployment numbers, I will do whatever it takes to get the job done.  America has suffered attack and setbacks before and always risen from the ashes and flown to greater heights.  As America goes, so goes her champion, the American Beetle.  May God bless you, and may God bless the United States of America.

Silver Potato:
Hey yo, it’s Sil Po!  This Sunday I gots ta fight my old friend Am B, a goblin, and a plate of curry.  But years ago I was a Kaiju Grand Champion.  I’ve seen a LOT weirder than this shiznit.  And believe you me, the Silver Stud Spud can more than handle his biznezz.  I’m going to survive this match because the AWL needs the Uber Tuber.  With teams of villains like the NRE and YTM running around, the AWL is going to need heroes in Season 3 and I am just the starch for the job.  So Am B, Curry, Mags, I’m sorry and it’s nothing personal, but I’m going to have to send you head over heels with the Au Gratin Kick!  Peace the spud out!

Maglubiyet Jr.:
              Gpigrtg45g-9ipvf83uvdw675ad79u5t:lryn0-94268’$($’$KVWI**+>?*`??~I($”JIVOU)’IRIJWROUi3ijbipjb80ubinkb8ij 0 –wij4 ijijipj98bpiwpij35-9 ji3i 80i Barbra Streisand!

Curry Man:
Watashi wa Curry Man desu.  King of Spice desu.  Watashi AWL 60 NO LOSER.   Amerika no mushi, gin potato, Maglubiyet Jr. niban sanban shiban.  Curry Man ICHIBAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!

It’s official, the AWL employs some genially crazy people.  But after AWL 60, there will be one less nut bag running around here.  Join us this weekend for Batsumania and a whole lot more Animated Wrestling League action!!

Last news post before AWL 59

OK, this is the last news update before AWL 59.  We have a lot to cover and we’re going to start with the main event.  If you read yesterday’s post, you know the main event of AWL 59 was left as “TBA.”  It turns out that the AWL Commissioner was in the process of booking a HUGE tag team preview of AWL 60.  Check this out:

The Masters of the Mask (Libre & Ma-Ji-Ku) vs. The N.R.E. (Lucha & Bruce Hoyt)

Obviously, the main story here is Lucha and Libre being across the ring from each other a mere week before their history making, rivalry ending, destiny changing, Mask vs. Mask Match at AWL 60.  This will be your last chance to see the brothers from Mexico compete in the tag team division that brought them to the AWL in the first place.

Furthermore, both the champion and challenger of the Light Heavyweight Division will be in this match.  After losing his title to Ma-Ji-Ku nearly 2 years ago, and failing to even come close to winning it again in his several title matches since, Bruce Hoyt is DESPERATE to prove himself against the longest reigning champion in AWL history.

Two stories collide in the main event.  Be there at AWL 59 and see who earns the all-important momentum going into the season finale.

In other news, we have heard back from both Ganba and Yarina Talent Management Inc. and can now report the names of the opponents chosen by each man for the other.  First, the AWL World Heavyweight Champion’s opponent for Ganba:

From the offices of Yarina Talent Management Inc.
Ganba is yesterday’s news.  He is no longer the best wrestler in Japan.  In fact, he is no longer the best Japanese wrestler in the AWL.  Thankfully, we now have the opportunity to prove it.  At AWL 59, Ganba will wrestle . . . HAKAISHA!

Wow.  Ganba faces one half the AWL World Tag Team Champions.  It’s going to be Japanese Megastar vs. Japanese Destroyer at AWL 59!

Now, we turn the tables and announce who Ganba has chosen as Wonder Kid’s opponent:

ワンーダーキッド! 今週のAWL59であなたはすごいチャレンジを倒しなければならない。あなたの敵は前のAWLチャンピオン。 あなたの敵は…タイニ選手だ! キッド、おまえは戦士の心を持ているのか?

And now in English for our foreign readers:

Wonder Kid! At this week’s AWL 59 you will face a true challenge.  Your opponent is a former AWL Champion.  Your opponent is . . . TINY!  Kid, do you have the heart of a warrior?

So the final and complete card for AWL 59 is as follows:

Main Event:
The Masters of the Mask vs. The N.R.E.

1. Luke James vs. Lee Masters vs. Maglubiyet Jr. vs. Curry Man
4-Corners Match.  Loser enters Batsumania.

2. Ganba vs. HAKAISHA (Chosen by Wonder Kid)

3. Wonder Kid vs. Tiny (Chosen by Ganba)

4. ???? vs. ???? (Those who neither won nor lost match #1).
Loser goes to Batsumania.

It all goes down in less than 24 hours right here on AWLwrestling.blogspot.com.
