Full Card for AWL 274

AWL 274:
MAIN EVENT
Tiger Mask W (0) vs. Ganba’s Shadows (0)
Points in Play
The obvious hundred million yen question is “Will Tiger Mask II show up?”  He has his final medical check the morning before the show.  If he isn’t cleared to compete, he will forfeit his title match at Golden War 2019.

Resu Red, Hassan, Azteckaizer NEO, & El Hijo del Majiku vs. The Dorei Corps
Atomicos Match
Over the last couple of months, a number of AWL Wrestlers have stepped up to address the threat of The Dorei Corps.  None have met with much success.  Perhaps an Avengers-like team up?

The Empire (2) vs. The Tiger Brother (0)
Points in Play
The former AWL World Tag Team Champions face off against the only team with two points on the board.  If The Empire win, they will challenge The Spirit Pack at the Golden War.

Athena Jane (#1) vs. Resu Pink (#2)
Rank on the Line
One year ago the AWL Joshi Championship was created in the first ever AWL Joshi Ladder Match.  In recognition of this history, the AWL Joshi Championship WILL be defended at the Golden War.  This match will determine the challenger.  Akira Merune has held the Joshi Championship for an entire year.  Will the giantess or the heroine bring that impressive streak to an end?

Danger 13 (0) vs. Big Time Thug S (0)
Points in Play
Mr. Smiles and Tanaka Kenichi got into it last week in the Danger Zone 4 way match, so they’ve mutually agreed to take their issue and make it a tag team match.

Ladies of Lucha (0) vs. Monster Union Presents: Unholy Alliance (0)
2 Point/20 Minute Match
Last week these for joshi wrestlers fought to an impressive time limit draw.  This weekend they get 20 minutes and two points will be on the line.  We won’t be able to hold these four back, so we will jump right into the action!

A Ten Days War!

This year Japan will celebrate the dawn of a new era and the crowning of a new emperor with an unprecedented TEN DAY GOLDEN WEEK!  Of course, we here at the AWL have our own celebrations and this year our annual Golden War Supercard is also set to be bigger and better than ever.
We’re looking for challengers to as many titles as possible.  That forces us to confront some unfortunate truths.  First of all, the AWL Grand Championship must be defended on such an auspicious event.  But the current #1 contender, Tiger Mask II, has not been cleared to compete.  He has a final medical check before this weekend’s AWL 274 event.  If the doctors don’t give him the OK, he will sadly be forced to forfeit his title opportunity and the next man in line (H-03 of the Dorei Corps) will take his place.
Over in the tag team division, The Empire only needs one more point to challenge The Spirit Pack for the AWL World Tag Team Titles.  We can only assume at this time that they will get a shot at that 3rd point this weekend at AWL 274.
Finally, in some unqualified good news, Dragon has informed the AWL Commissioner that he has two students ready to move from the AWL Dojo to the main roster.  So, for the first time since the New Year’s Tournament, it’s time for a Graduation Match and it will take place at the Golden War!

Estrella Dorada Explains Himself

Last weekend we witnessed a SHOCKING betrayal.  After losing their two points to The Augments, Liga Cosmica reentered the ring after the match for what appeared to be a moment of commiseration with their fans when BAM!  Estrella Dorada clocked an already badly beaten Erupcion Solar in the back of the head knocking the AWL IC Champion unconscious for a short time.  It’s taken a couple of says but I’ve finally gotten in contact with the Gold Star of Lucha Libre.  I had only one question: Why?

(The following message has been translated from the original Spanish by the AWL Translation Team)
Why?  Because that little bastard deserved it!!  I carried his ass to the World Tag Titles…twice.  But the second I get injured; he picks a fight with Nippon Yokatta and becomes the IC Champion.  He basically forgot I existed.  But as soon as I come back to the AWL he’s all “Great to have you back!  Let’s reform the team, blah blah blah” as if I hadn’t nearly lost my career.  Well, I didn’t believe a word of it!  He left me in the clutches of what your planet laughingly calls “doctors.”
I was willing to go along with his crap until we lost those two points.  After that, he was no use to me anymore.  Why did I knock his tiny ass out?  Because he thinks he doesn’t need me.  Time for him to learn otherwise.  Time for the Gold Star to shine!!

Tag Matches across the gender spectrum

It wouldn’t be the Animated Wrestling League without a tag team match or 3 and this weekend will be no exception!
Liga Cosmica (2) vs. The Augments (0)
The recently reunited luchadores are undefeated since Estrella Dorada returned from injury.  But this weekend they face their biggest test in their journey back to the AWL World Tag Team Championships.

Yin & Yang (0) vs. Tiger & Bunny (0)
Over in the Joshi Division, the most experienced tag team in AWL history, Yin & Yang face off against Spring Tiger and Usa-chan.  But with two of her charges set to defend the men’s tag team titles in the main event, will Spring Tiger be able to focus on her own tag team match?  Or will her duties as a manager prove too much of a distraction?

Ladies of Lucha (0) vs. Monster Union Presents: The Unholy Alliance (0)
The two best luchadoras in the Joshi division verses the duo with the longest name in the history of tag team wrestling (but at least it’s better than “The Viking Experience”).  Two women, a werewolf, and a cat girl seek not only points in the tag team division, but victories in the overall win loss records and hopefully earn future shots at the AWL Joshi Championship.

All this plus the AWL World’s Tag Team Titles on the line in the main event!  Tune in to AWL 273 this weekend for an incredible evening at the matches with the Animated Wrestling League!

Pride and Rank on the Line

Last weekend, The Arab American Dream defeated M-05 in fairly decisive fashion.  This week he moves up the numbers of the Dorei Corps.  But this time, there’s a lot more on the line.  H-03 (f.k.a. “The Japanese Destroyer” Hakaisha) also happens to be the #2 contender in the AWL Best 4.  That changes things a bit.  If H-03 loses to an unranked wrestler, he will automatically be reduced in rank and Hassan will automatically qualify for the next Fight for 4.
If Hassan’s victory is particularly impressive (a quick submission or knockout for example), it may knock Dr. Jigoku’s slave out of the Best 4 entirely!  In which case the Arab American Dream would take his place.

Danger Zone Report

That’s right wrestling fans, we’re a couple of months away from the Season 14 finale, that means it’s time to start talking about the Batsumania Danger Zone.  Ever season finale, the 4 wrestlers with the worst win-loss records enter Batsumania and the loser of that unique match is immediately FIRED!  As of last weekend, the records are as follows:

Wrestler
    Win
    Loss
   Total
as of AWL 272
Tanaka Kenichi
49
-63
-14
Mr. Smiles
12
-25
-13
Frederick Victor
14
-23
-9
Hasaiki
11
-19
-8

Some familiar names and some first-time entrants.  For the record, every time Fredrick Victor lost a World of Sport Rules Match, it counted as one loss not two.  Additionally, reigning champions and #1 contenders are immune from Batsumania regardless of their win-loss records (though that does not apply at this time).
In the interest of giving these wrestlers a fair chance to save themselves, all four will face each other at AWL 273 this weekend in a 4-way match with up to three victories available to the winner.
THUGLIFE Tanaka Kenichi vs. Mr. Smiles vs. Frederick Victor vs. Hasaiki
4-Way Danger Zone Match!

Tag Title Match Confirmed!

By the end of last weekend’s AWL 272 event, 5 points had been handed out in the men’s tag team division.  That included 3 points earned by The Spirit Pack for their clean sweep in the 4-way Elimination Match at the start of the show.
The AWL Commissioner has confirmed the main event for next weekend’s AWL 273 show.  Predictable doesn’t necessarily mean bad.
AWL 273
MAIN EVENT
The Tiger Brothers (C) vs. The Spirit Pack (3)
AWL World’s Tag Team Championship Match
2nd Title Defense

Speaking of the Unified School of the Tiger Style, Tiger Mask II has not yet been cleared to wrestle by AWL Senior Medical Official Dr. Marcus Feelgood.  It’s important to remember that Tiger Mask II is currently the #2 contender in the AWL Best 4.  If he is unable to appear for this scheduled title match (when it is eventually announced) he will lose by forfeit and be removed from the AWL Best 4 and the then #2 contender will take his place.  It’s unfortunate, but the AWL Rule Book is quite clear on this matter.

OK, you can have a singles match too..

With AWL 272 shaping up to be a tag team heavy show, the AWL Commissioner has added a singles match pitting the Forces of Jigoku against one of the best the AWL has to offer:

Hassan vs. M-05
Ever since losing the AWL Grand Championship to Kid Canada, M-05 (formerly Ma-Ji-Ku) has fallen out of favor with Dr. Jigoku.  A victory over The Arab American Dream could be a big step towards getting out of the dog house.  As for Hassan, he’s been in and out of the AWL this season dealing with some nagging injuries.  This match could be Hassan’s first step towards a Fight for 4 and a path back to  the AWL Grand Championship.

High stakes at AWL 272 this Sunday on YouTube and right here at AWLWrestling.blogspot.jp.

What's One More Tag Match

We already have 6 tag teams competing at AWL 272, so why not two more?  In a move seemingly intended to show the depth of the tag team division, the AWL Commissioner has added this to the card:

Liga Cosmica (1) vs. The Flying Yukis (0)
This will be a first time ever match up as the luchadores face off against a team that didn’t even exist the last time they were a tag team.  Liga Cosmica aren’t the youngest tag team in the AWL anymore, so how will they deal with this change of dynamics?  Find out this weekend at AWL 272.

The Shadows Fall

Two weeks ago, the demon Gisei used that mystic stone of his to summon two…things…called Ganba’s Shadows.  If I had to guess, I’d say they were some kind of simulacrums or shadow golems of Ganba Hisshi DARK.  But everything we know about these creatures is pure speculation because they never tagged into their debut match.  Well, this weekend we’ll finally see what these minions of darkness can do against the best tag team in AWL history:

A sign of the 4.

Happy Wrestlemania Hangover Day (A holiday celebrated by wrestling fans around the globe!) and welcome back to the Animated Wrestling League regular season action.  Two matches already announced for AWL 272 and both involve men from the Lucha de Apuestas from Sakuramania Wrestlegenesis:
Resu Red vs. X
Fight for 4
The leader of the Purosentai Resurangers may have lost the Golden Opportunity at the Supercard, but his win-loss record is good enough to earn him the chance to enter the AWL Best 4 and take the more conventional path to the AWL Grand Championship.

The Augments vs. The Spirit Pack vs. Big Time Thug S vs. Danger 13
4-Way Elimination Match
Points in Play
It worked well for the women, so let’s give the men a chance.  Eliminate a team, earn a point.  Get eliminated, lose all your points.  The Last team standing could walk away with one, two, or possibly the all important THREE points and a one night trip to the AWL World Tag Team Titles.  Of note in this match, the biggest and baddest weapons in the arsenal of the man who now controls the Golden Opportunity, Dr. Jigoku.

Champions and Challengers

At Sakuramania Wrestlegenesis, three championships will be decided in the AWL Ring.  As AWL custom dictates, we open the floor to champions and challengers to speak their minds on the eve of combat.  First up, the British Openweight Championship (and we thank the British Wrestling Alliance for once again allowing us to host a title match for one of their championships in the Animated Wrestling League):

Shynron: I didn’t come to the AWL to become a British champion.  I’ve held titles around the world, but winning a UK championship in Tokyo seems like one for the record books.  But what really motivates me in this match is cowardice.  Frederick Victor couldn’t beat me on his own, so he gets his pet blue collar brawler to do his dirty work for him.  Yeah, I’ve seen that before in my life, it’s nothing new.  Jerry, I know how big you are and how big of a challenge this match is going to be.  But giants don’t slay dragons.

Frederick Victor (Speaking for Big Jerry):  My most sincere apologies, but Jerry is in the gym training for this match and simply cannot be disturbed at the moment.  But let me tell you what’s going to happen this weekend.  The British Openweight Championship will come back to The Empire.  Why?  Because we are British, and the championship is our birthright.  We will not allow an…American…to sully the belt one moment longer than necessary.

Next, the Joshi Tag Team Championships:

Queens of Wrestling:
Dragoness: This is fantastic!  A title match on a Supercard like Sakuramania Wrestlegenesis is an important validation for the newest titles in the AWL.  Akira Merune and I congratulate the Purosentai Resurangers on their impressive victory and earning 3 points in one night.  That’s a rare accomplishment in the AWL.  It’s been a long time since AWL 160 and the finals of the Joshi Tag Team Tournament none of us are the women or the wrestlers we were then.  The Queens of Wrestling look forward to seeing how you have grown.

Purosentai Resurangers:
Resu Pink: We are defenders of justice.  This weekend our teammates will seek justice for fallen heroes.  Where as Yellow and I will seek justice for our failure at AWL 160.  Our connection to that which empowers us is stronger than ever and the mistakes of last time won’t be repeated.  We respect you as warriors.  Let’s have a fantastic match!

How nice.  Now for a match that won’t be anywhere near as friendly.  The main event for the AWL Grand Championship.

Sammy Nix: I’m scared ****less of this guy.  I’m man enough to admit it.  This mother****er is actually thinks he’s a demon from Hell!  Maybe he’s for real, maybe it’s all a magic show.  But if there’s one thing I do know, it’s how to win a pro wrestling match.  Wherever it comes from, I know it’s all meant to psych me out and I’m not going to allow that ta happen.  Leave da hocus pocus at home and fight me like a man!!

Neither Ganba Hisshi Dark nor Gisei were available for comment.

Dr. Jigoku Speaks

This weekend at AWL Supercard: Sakuramania Wrestlegenesis 2019 we will have only the 4th Lucha de Apuestas in AWL history and the first to involve 8 wrestlers.  If the Forces of Jigoku win, he gains control of the Golden Opportunity, but if Jigoku’s minions lose, all four will be freed of their control collars.  As powerful as the Golden Opportunity is, why would Dr. Jigoku agree to risk cutting his stable of wrestlers in HALF?  Well, I e-mailed him earlier this week to ask that very question.  This is the full text of his response:

You sentimental fool!  I don’t give a damn about those purple peons, they are tools nothing more nothing less.  Like any tool they are only useful until they break.  Any true grand master would happily sacrifice their pawns if the reward is great enough.  I want that Golden Opportunity.  You want your precious heroes back.  Seems the stakes are even.  In fact, I issue an open challenge.  Make it worth my while and I’ll give you the opportunity to lose to your…SUPERIORS…in the future.

Well, I certainly read that as Jigoku leaving the door open for future wager matches.  But the primary question remains, what does the bad doctor consider “Worth his while”?
