Never count out the little guy.

We've received a message and our proper comeuppance.  This comes to us from El Santo Azul and has been run through the AWL translation team.

And now, let's run that through the AWL translation team:

I normally prefer to let my actions in the ring do my talking for me.  But this demands a response.  Two days ago I read the official preview for AWL 103.  When they were talking about my tournament match with Ganba, my name was barely even mentioned.  All the AWL blog reporters talked about was how Ganba was going to be able to win two matches in one night.

Well, what about me?  I know I'm an underdog, but don't forget who I am.  I am the son of El Santo.  I am the man who survived Batsumania.  I am a former AWL Tag Team Champion.  This is my 4th season in the AWL and I am NOT a rookie anymore.  I am The Blue Saint!  I am the future of Lucha Libre!

At AWL 103, I am going to give this match EVERYTHING I have and if I catch Ganba in the Freedom's Wing or hit him with the Final Flight, I'm going to move one step forward to my destiny as the NEW AWL World Heavyweight Champion!

See if El Santo Azul makes good on his words tomorrow at AWL 103: Tag Matsuri 2014.

Yarina's issued another press release (sorry).

The title pretty much says it all.  The CEO of Yarina Talent Management Inc. has sent another press release for me to regurgitate at you.  Apologies in advance.

From the offices of Yarina Talent Management Incorporated:
Despite the AWL office's clearly slanderous statements about our organization and the AWL Commissioner's unfair ultimatum, our company has never been stronger.  At AWL 103, Crisis Gundan will defeat the two random singles wrestlers that have been thrown together for no reason.

After retaining the AWL World Tag Team Championships, our client Super Giant will become #1 contender to the AWL World Light Heavyweight Championship.  He will then make world wide wrestling headlines by defeating the IWGP Heavyweight Champion A.J. Styles for the AWL World Light Heavyweight Championship.  We expect that this future victory will open doors for us in New Japan Pro Wrestling.

Finally, YTM Inc. is proud to present the Main Event of AWL 120, the Season 6 Finale.  In the finals of the AWL Championship Tournament, Wonder Kid will face Jack "Breakdown" Butcher to crown the next AWL World's Heavyweight Champion.

As a response to the AWL Commissioner's ridiculous pronouncement regarding the championships, at the beginning of Season 7, the championships will be rebranded in the following manner:

AWL World Heavyweight Championship:
YTM World Super Heavyweight Championship

AWL World Tag Team Championship:
YTM Tag Team Championship

AWL World Light Heavyweight Championship:
YTM Mini Championship

AWL 103 Preview

WE HAVE #1 CONTENDERS!!

Dragon & Ganba earned their 3rd point at AWL Mid-Week Wrestling and will cash in their 3 points this weekend at AWL 103 as the main event of the Tag Matsuri!

Speaking of which, I have a HUGE announcement from the AWL Commissioner's office regarding this weekend.  I hope you're sitting down for this because nobody (including Chikara) has ever done this before:

By order of the AWL Commissioner, NO POINTS CAN BE LOST DURING THE TAG MATSURI!!!

So even if a team loses a match this week, they keep any points they've earned.  However, points may still be cashed in.  And that's important this week more than any other and you'll see why in a moment because here is the full card for AWL 103: Tag Matsuri 2014.

Main Event:
Crisis Gundan (C) vs. Dragon & ガンバ
Yarina is still under the AWL Commissioner's ultimatum.  She must control all the titles by the end of the season or be fired and have her stable disbanded.  At the moment, YTM Inc. controls only the AWL World Tag Team Titles.  So this is a necessary defensive move for Crisis Gundan.  However, as someone who is truly sick and tired of this *****, I'm rooting for Dragon & ガンバ.  However, Ganba has a disadvantage in this match.  More on that later.

Tag Team Gauntlet Match
To Be Contested to 3 Points
The meat and potatoes of the Tag Matsuri.  In the past, we've had tag team tournaments, we've had tag team debuts, and now we're doing something we've never done before.  A Tag Team Gauntlet Match!  The rules are as follows: 2 teams will begin.  Every time a team loses, a new team takes their place.  Each fall will have a 10 minute time limit.  The match will continue until one team has 3 points.  That winning team will face the winners of the main event at a future date.

AWL Championship Tournament Round of 16 Match
ガンバ vs. El Santo Azul
Yes, Ganba is pulling double duty this week.  The brackets of the Round of 16 (which were determined by win-loss records) have thrust us into a schedule conflict.  Apparently, Ganba spoke to the AWL Commissioner yesterday and said that he has no problem with two matches in one night.  But in consideration of Ganba, the AWL Commissioner has scheduled this match to be first on the card to give Ganba the maximum possible rest time before the main event.

It all takes place this weekend at AWL 103: Tag Matsuri 2014!

Tuesday, August 26, 2014

It's time for the 2014 Tag Matsuri! (Or it will be this weekend)

At the end of every summer, the AWL holds a little event to celebrate the art and awesomeness that is tag team wrestling.  It's the AWL Tag Matsuri!  For those of you who don't know, matsuri (祭) means "festival" in Japanese.  In the past, we've had tag team tournaments, tag team debuts, and tag team title matches.

Before we get to this year's festivities, let us review the current standings in the 3 point system:

Dragon & Ganba: 2 points.
Masters of the Mask: 1 point.
Dragon & James: 1 point.
A.J. Styles & Ma-Ji-Ku: 1 point.
All other teams: 0 points.

So not a lot of points in the system at the moment.  But that will change by this time next week.

First, there will be a tag team match at AWL Mid Week Wrestling tomorrow.  Dragon and Ganba will compete for their 3rd point against The New Classics.  IF Ganba and Dragon win that match, they will challenge for the titles at AWL 103.

AWL Mid-Week Wrestling will be posted tomorrow.  I'll be back the following day with the full line up for AWL 103: Tag Matsuri 2014!

AWL Mid Week Wrestling 101.5

AWL Mid Week Wrestling 101.5 by AWLBoss

The triumphant return of AWL Mid-Week Wrestling!  The new numbering system is meant to make it clear where episodes fall in the AWL timeline.  101.5 means that this episode falls between AWL 101 & 102.

Tonight, we continue our search for the top 16 contenders in the AWL Championship Tournament.  In tonight's qualifying match, El Santo Azul faces Jon Shina.  It's the man who barely survived Batsumania against the man who.....got plastic surgery to look more like John Cena.

Where do we find these nuts?

AWL 101: The Season 6 Premiere.

AWL 101 by AWLBoss

Card for AWL 101.....sort of.

OK wrestling fans, this is the best I can do.  While we already know who will be competing in the AWL Championship Tournament, we don't know any of the qualifying round match ups.  The AWL Commissioner is keeping the pairings very close to the vest.  But my sources in the office HAVE gotten me something, I know the specific wrestlers that will compete at AWL 101.  I'm sorry it's not a full fight card, but it's the best I can do under the circumstances.

AWL 101:

Matt Classic will vacate the AWL World Heavyweight Championship

The following wrestlers will compete in qualifying matches to enter the AWL Championship Tournament:
Dragon
ガンバ (Ganba)
Ma-Ji-Ku
American Beetle
Lee Masters
Sammy Nix
Curry Man
Tiny
"Lightning" Mike Quackenbush
黒山 (Kuroyama)

It all happens this weekend at AWL 101: The Season 6 Premiere.  A whole new era will begin this Sunday.  Be there on the ground floor when the action kicks into high gear!.

An Ultimatum.

It's obviously been a busy week in the AWL and today is no different.  This has been buzzing around the offices for several days, but I finally have confirmation from the AWL Commissioner's office and can therefore report it to you.

The AWL Commissioner has had ENOUGH with Yarina.  Not only has she started getting physically involved in matches, as she did in the Wonder Kid-HAKAISHA! match at AWL 100, but she has ONCE AGAIN raised the appearance fee for her wrestlers knowing full well that they've already been booked for the AWL Championship Tournament.  Speaking on behalf of the AWL office staff, we could all hear the screaming and cursing from the boss' office when that call came in.  About half an hour later, the following message was circulated to all office staff:

Attn Staff:

The Animated Wrestling League will accept NO MORE increases in appearance fees.  If Yarina wishes to pull her clients from the show, that's her decision.  The four members of YTM Inc have already been announced for the AWL Championship Tournament and under AWL regulations, if they fail to appear they shall lose their matches by forfeit and Yarina will lose any chance to control the AWL World's Heavyweight Championship during Season 6.  And that is especially significant today because I have decided to place YTM Inc. under the following ultimatum:

If Yarina Talent Management Inc. does NOT control ALL the AWL Championships by the end of AWL 120, Yarina's business relationship with the AWL will be terminated and her stable will be forcibly disbanded.  THIS!  I have COMMISSIONED!!  BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Wow!  Note to self, never make the boss angry.  So this means that if all 4 of Yarina's wrestlers are eliminated from the tournament, she's done.  Only the winner of the AWL Championship Tournament will hold the AWL World Heavyweight Championship this season.

Dang.

The Challengers for the Title.

As I promised, here are the AWL Wrestlers that will compete in the randomly selected qualifying matches for a birth in the round of 16.

First of all, 5 wrestlers have been granted a first round bye.  They are:

1. HAKAISHA!
2. "Big" Ben Nelson
3. Hassan
4. "Peacemaker" Luke James

Recognize that list?  Yep, it's the AWL Best 4.  The AWL Commissioner has seen fit to grant these 4 a pass to the round of 16 as acknowledgement of their previous status as top contender's to the title.

The 5th man who's earned a first round bye?  The winner of the 2014 お正月大会: Wonder Kid.  While the AWL Commissioner (and most of the fans) dislike the guy, his status as Bearer of the Prophecy also earns special consideration.

The remaining wrestlers who must earn their way into the round of 16 are (in no particular order):

1. A.J. Styles (AWL World Light Heavyweight Champion/IWGP Heavyweight Champion)
2. Dragon
3. Ganba
4. Ma-Ji-Ku
5. Lee Masters
6. Sammy Niz
7. 黒山
8. Super Giant (AWL World Tag Team Champion)
9. Jack Butcher (AWL World Tag Team Champion)
10. Tiny
11. Curry Man
12. American Beetle
13. El Santo Azul
14. El Rudo Rojo
15. "Lightning" Mike Quackenbush
16. Tiger Mask II
17. DOOM BUNNY!
18. Wolf
19. Kid Canada
20. THUGLIFE 田中健一
21. Wrestler X
22. Jon Shina

How we will determine a new champion.

OK Wrestling Fans, this is the one you've been waiting nearly a month for.  The AWL Commissioner has put out a statement regarding the vacant and soon to be surrendered AWL World's Heavyweight Championship.  I'll let you hear it straight from the boss himself:

Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen, I am the AWL Commissioner.  First, allow me to thank Matt Classic for his years of service and the many excellent matches and memories.  On behalf of everyone in the Animated Wrestling League, Wrestler, crew, staff, and fan, we wish Matt well in all his future endeavors.  Enjoy your retirement my friend, you've earned it.

Now, let us move on to the reason you are likely all here.  What shall be the future of the AWL World's Heavyweight Championship?  Over the past several weeks I have been contemplating this most weighty of problems.  Mr. Classic's retirement breaks the lineage of the championship, for the first time in AWL history, we do not have a champion.  Obviously, for the sake of the Animated Wrestling League, we can not afford to have a paper champion.  So we are going to do something that has never been attempted before in the AWL, nor anywhere in professional wrestling: WE WILL NOT HAVE A CHAMPION.....FOR ALL OF SEASON 6!!

That is because, beginning at AWL 101, we will begin a 32-man, single elimination tournament that will conclude at AWL 120, the finale of Season 6.

AWL 101, 102, and the first episode of the revived Mid-Week-Wrestling, will consist entirely of qualifying matches. From that point forward, there shall be a single tournament match each episode until the finals in December at AWL 120 where we shall crown a NEW AWL World's Heavyweight Champion.  The winner of the tournament must win 5 consecutive matches to prove themselves worthy of the championship.

THIS!!  I have COMMISSIONED!!!  BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

There you have it wrestling fans, a season long tournament!  Something that has never been done in professional wrestling as far as I'm aware.  Tune in tomorrow when I'll reveal the full list of the 32 wrestlers who will compete in the qualifying matches at AWL 101, 102, and Mid-Week Wrestling.

Just 7 more days!!

That's right ladies and gentlemen!  There are many inevitable things in this world.  The seasons change, day becomes night, John Cena gets a new flavor of T-shirt, and the next season of the Animated Wrestling League appears on the horizon.  In just one week AWL 101 will be broadcast on this very website.

Already scheduled for the show is an appearance by AWL World's Heavyweight Champion Matt Classic.  He is scheduled to deliver his farewell address to the AWL fans and he will vacate the AWL World Heavyweight Championship.

Stay tuned the rest of this week, we will have daily updates leading up to the Season 6 Premier.
