Promos from Hassan and Wonder Kid.

As per AWL tradition I happily turn this final blog post before the next Grand Championship Match over to both the champion and the challenger.

Hassan: Wonder Kid. I heard what you said before Golden War. You think I'm just a stepping stone back to the title? Sorry Kid (How old are you going to get before you stop calling yourself that?), but I've worked too hard to become the AWL Grand Champion and I'm not giving it up without a New York style fight! I said before that your mouth is bigger than your muscles, but your ego makes the rest of you look like Gilberg on a diet. I know you can be beaten. I'm not the kid you crushed defending the AWL Championship 7 seasons ago. I'm the Arab American Dream. I'm living proof that hard work pays off. I'm the AWL Grand Champion and this weekend exactly NONE of that is going to change. See you tomorrow kid and I'll show you how we do this down town!

What? I'm the Grand Champion, that means I get to make Ghost Busters references whenever I want!

Wonder Kid: Listen pipsqueak. I don't care how long ago it was. I've beaten you before and I'll do it again. You aren't the only one who's changed in the last 9 seasons. I've got new tricks up my sleeve that will not only get me my championship back, but will make it a piece of cake to get my long over due year long title reign! No more words. Just fists!

Wonder Kid challenges Hassan for the Animated Wrestling League Grand Championship in less than 24 hours at AWL 174.

Full card for AWL 174!

Even with our mystery tag team, we can now give you the full card for AWL 174.
AWL 174:
MAIN EVENT
Hassan (C) vs. Wonder Kid (#1)
AWL Grand Championship Match
1st Title Defense

Wyvern vs. THUGLIFE田中健一

X & X (0) vs. George Fraser & Mr. Smiles (0)
Points in Play

HAKAISHA! (#2) vs. 千葉赤城 (Chiba Akagi) (#3)
Rank on the Line

Azteckaizer NEO vs. E.N. Hance

RUZAI (1) vs. El Rudo Rojo & Jon Shina (0)
2 Point/20 Minute Match

Yes, two new matches have been added since yesterday. The Japanese Destroyer and The Scion of Submission will face each other with their rank at stake. Remember, win or lose, Wonder Kid will be out of the AWL Best 4 by the end of the evening so this is a defacto #1 Contender's Match.

Additionally, the bearer of the Star of Aztec will be in singles action. We know that when that mystic gem activates, the world can literally turn upside down and inside out. Though I doubt he will have to use the gem's full power against Danger Zone regular E.N. Hance.

Tomorrow, exclusive interviews with Hassan and Wonder Kid ahead of their Grand Championship Match.

Tag Team Return

Some say mystery is the spice of life. Those people have never tried to promote a wrestling show. The AWL Commissioner has...sort of...announced another tag team match for AWL 174:
X & X (0) vs. George Fraser & Mr. Smiles (0)
Points in Play
For those of you not familiar with Japanese pro wrestling custom. The use of X as a name indicates an known but unrevealed surprise wrestler (as opposed to a question mark which indicates a wrestler yet to be determined). In other words, the odd couple of the AWL Tag Team Division have no idea who they will face on Sunday and neither do I.

So, uh, tune in and find out?

Wyvern calls out Tanaka Kenichi

A challenge has been laid down from one former AWL Grand Champion to another:

You lying, cheating, snake. Tanaka Kenichi, don't think I've forgotten about you. You ended my Sensei's career, you stole the AWL Grand Championship, and you blackmailed the AWL Commissioner into letting you and your little circus back into the AWL when you were rightly fired! I've given you a pass these last 3 months because my duties as AWL Grand Champion took priority over avenging my teacher. Well, now that burden is off of my back. Hassan is the champion now and I know he's going to be a great one. But that leaves me free to pursue my own interests.

That means you Tanaka. I look at the website and I see that you are right back where you belong, in the Danger Zone. That means that I only have 6 weeks or so to deal with you. I have asked the AWL Commissioner for a match with you one on one. I had to give up my slot in the next Fight for 4 to get him to agree, but I don't care.

You put Dragon out of wrestling, now it's time for The Young Dragon to do the same to you!

As soon as this I received this message, I contacted the AWL Commissioner's office and had the match confirmed for this Sunday:
AWL 174:

Wyvern vs. THUGLIFE 田中健一

Title match and tag team match confirmed.

Two matches have been confirmed for AWL 174 next week. First, Hassan's opponent for the AWL Grand Championship confirmed himself in grand fashion this past Sunday defeating not one but two other wrestlers win relative ease.
AWL 174:
MAIN EVENT!
Hassan (C) vs. Wonder Kid (#1)
AWL Grand Championship Match
1st Title Defense

And in the tag team division, the rules are quite clear. In the event of a time limit draw in a tag team match, a rematch is to be scheduled as soon as is convenient with both an additional 5 minutes and an extra point thrown into the mix. Unfortunately, this time that means more of two teams that nobody likes.
RUZAI (1) vs. Jon Shina & El Rudo Rojo (0)
2 Points/20 Minute Time Limit
Of course, I need to mention (seriously, it's in my contract) that if RUZAI win this match, they will have earned 3 points and, ugh, will challenge for the AWL World Tag Team Championship.

There are still plenty of matches left to announce for this weekend so stay tuned to this page for all the news on the Animated Wrestling League.

Full card for AWL 173.

In less than 24 hours, we will not only put on a clinic of tag team wrestling, the Grand Championship picture will be impacted:
AWL 173:
MAIN EVENT:
Jack Butcher (C) vs. Project Tetsu
AWL Intercontinental Championship Match
1st Title Defense.
While we all thought the steel cage match at Golden War 2016was going to be the end of things between these two, Dr. Jigoku has pointed out that Project Tetsu (having beaten Jack Butcher at Golden War) deserved the first title shot against the new AWL IC Champ. It's not often the bad doctor makes sense, but this is the exception that proves the rule. The AWL Commissioner agreed with the argument and booked what is sure to be a knock down drag out brawl.
Wonder Kid (#1) vs. HAKAISHA! (#2) vs. 千葉赤城 (#3)
Reshuffle Match
Rank is on the Line!
We already know that the next AWL Grand Championship Match is scheduled for next week. So we need to find a challenger. Currently set as #1 Contender is the Man Muscle Mountain, Wonder Kid who has already declared his certain victory. But AWL tradition dictates that the #1 Contender continue to prove himself. This will be a 2 fall elimination match. The loser of the 1st fall will be the #3 Contender. The loser of the 2nd fall, #2. And the winner of the bout #1 and he shall go on to AWL 174 to challenge Hassan for the Animated Wrestling League Grand Championship!

The All Americans (0) vs. The Augments (0)
Points in Play

Shin Jidai (1) vs. The Strike Warriors (0)
Points in Play

RUZAI (1) vs. Jon Shina & El Rudo Rojo (0)
Points in Play
And there you have it, the full card for AWL 173. Now be warned, all of these matches are on the higher end of the time limit scale. The main event IC Title Match will have a 2 minute time limit, and all the other matches (by virtue of being tag team or multi-man matches) are scheduled for up to 15 minutes. So that's up to 80 minutes of wrestling set for a 60 minute show.

Sometimes I am a reeeeeal idiot!

Points on the Board. Champions past and present to appear.

As I hinted at the end of AWL 172, this week at AWL 173, we will see the first in ring appearances of Hassan and Wyvern since the former won the AWL Grand Championship from the latter. They will both appear in tag team action in 2 of the 3 tag team matches announced by the AWL Commissioner today:
AWL 173:
The All Americans (0) vs. The Augments (0)
Points in Play

Shin Jidai (1) vs. The Strike Warriors (0)
Points in Play

RUZAI (1) vs. Jon Shina & El Rudo Rojo (0)
Points in Play

As most of you know, Grand Champion Hassan is one half of The All Americans alongside American Beetle and Wyvern is a member of Shin Jidai alongside Matt Classic Jr. While they will not be across the ring from each other this week, it will be interesting to see how both men carry themselves considering their recent swap in status. Stay tuned tomorrow as we reveal the rest of the card for AWL 173.

AWL: By the Numbers 5-18-2016 Edition

Happy middle of the week Wrestling Fans! Despite technical difficulties, we have a NEW AWL IC Champion in Jack Butcher. With AWL 172 in the books, all three AWL Championships have changed hands in the last 14 days. That makes this the perfect opportunity for a little semi-regular feature I like to call AWL: By the Numbers.

AWL Grand Championship:
Champion: Hassan
Length of Reign: 14 Days (since 5-4-2016).
Title Defenses: 0.

AWL Best 4:
1. Wonder Kid.
2. HAKAISHA!
3. Chiba Akagi.
4. RAINMAKER Okada Kazuchika.

AWL Tag Team Championship:
Champions: The Destroyers of DOOM! (HAKAISHA! & Doombunny)
Length of Reign: 14 Days (since 5-4-2016).
Title Defenses: 0

Current Point Standings:
RUZAI (Bruce Hoyt & Maglubiyet Jr.): 1 Point.
Shin Jidai (Wyvern & Matt Classic Jr.): 1 Point.
All other teams: 0 Points.

AWL Intercontinental Championship:
Champion: Jack Butcher.
Length of Reign: 3 Days (since 5-15-2016).
Title Defenses 0 of 5.
Next Challenger: TBD.

Danger Zone:

For the TL;DR crowd out there (you illiterate shmucks), we have three new and untested champions. Virtually nobody has points on the board in the tag division. And American Beetle's success last weekend has raised him from dead last to second from last in the Win-Loss Rankings. While still in the Danger Zone, there're only two losses separating 1 from 4, so anything could still happen!

Next Grand Championship Match Announced!

One of the things all of us here at the AWL pride ourselves on is planning. Unlike some wrestling promoters I could name, the AWL Commissioner actually knows what he's going to do more than 24 hours in advance. It is in this spirit that the AWL Commissioner has authorized me to announce the next AWL Grand Championship Match:
AWL 174:
MAIN EVENT:
Hassan (C) vs. Wonder Kid (if still #1 Contender)
AWL Grand Championship Match
1st Title Defense

That's right. Unless something big changes between now and then, the new AWL Grand Champion Hassan will have a literally enormous challenge ahead of him in his first defense of the Grand Championship.

But that's a fortnight away. Tomorrow it's all about the AWL Intercontinental Championship and finding a new champion. Please stay tuned.

AWL Best 4 Update!

Ladies and Gentlemen, in an unexpected bit of news, the AWL Commissioner has made a unilateral addition to the AWL Best 4! While this is highly unorthodox, it is not unprecedented and is well within the AWL Commissioner's authority. The NEW AWL Best 4 is:

AWL Best 4:
1. Wonder Kid.
2. HAKAISHA!
3. 千葉赤城 (Chiba Akagi).
4. RAINMAKER オカダカズチカ.

That's right! The AWL Commissioner has made an offer to the 3 time IWGP Heavyweight Champion and leader of CHAOS to return to the AWL and compete for the AWL Grand Championship. I can only assume that the Rain Maker has accepted or this post would never have been published.

Full Card for AWL 172

Sometimes I really enjoy being right. As I predicted yesterday, the AWL Commissioner has announced the full card for AWL 172 giving us exact match ups between the two groups of wrestlers already announced:
AWL 172:
MAIN EVENT:
???? vs. ???? vs. ???? vs. ???? vs. ???? vs. ????
6-Man Scramble Match
AWL Intercontinental Championship Match

Scramble Match Qualifying Matches:

Bruce Hoyt vs. Ganba

Maglubiyet Jr. vs. Jack Butcher

Project Tetsu vs. Lee Masters

American Beetle vs. Sammy Nix

Doombunny! vs. Ma-Ji-Ku

Azteckaizer Neo vs. Yamada Jiro

And there you have it. It's worth noting that, in the case of a time limit draw in a qualifying match, the wrestler with the best Win-Loss record shall advance to the main event (that would be the wrestlers on the right in these listings).

New IC Champion to be determined!

After everything that happened at Golden War 2016, we not only have a new AWL Grand Champion AND new AWL World Tag Team Champions, we need a new AWL Intercontinental Champion as well.

The AWL Rule Book clearly states that once the AWL IC Title is cashed in, win or lose, a 6-Man Scramble Match shall be held as soon as possible to determine a new champion. The AWL Commissioner has decided that AWL 172 is the perfect opportunity. So next Sunday, we will have a one night tournament consisting of 6 singles matches, the winners of each match shall enter the main event Scramble Match for the AWL Intercontinental Championship!

But who shall fight? Simple, 6 men who won their matches last Wednesday at the Golden War (minus Hassan and anyone already in the AWL Best 4 of course).

Those 6 men are (In no particular order): The Doombunny, Project Tetsu, Azteckaizer NEO, American Beetle, Bruce Hoyt, and Maglubiyet Jr.

They will face the top 6 AWL Wrestlers (in terms of Win-Loss ratio) not currently Grand Champion or in the Best 4: Ganba, Jack Butcher, Lee Masters, Sammy Nix, Ma-Ji-Ku, and Yamada Jiro.

The exact matchups will hopefully be announced tomorrow so stay tuned!

First promo from the new champion.

Greetings wrestling fans! Hope you all had a great Golden Week and that you enjoyed our big trip to Kyoto for Golden War 2016. Well, it doesn't matter how good your Golden Week was, it wasn't as good as the NEW AWL Grand Champion's! Hassan fulfilled a year long quest and a life long dream in one night when he became the first man to defeat Wyvern in the AWL Ring.

After the Golden War, some of the AWL Wrestlers went straight home, others stayed for a couple of days in Kyoto to do some sightseeing. Hassan was one of the second group and I caught up with him outside Kinkakuji (The golden temple). He was still wearing his new AWL Grand Championship.

Ryu Sensei: Congratulations champ! I have to ask, now that you've had a few days to process your new status as AWL Grand Champion, what's going through your mind?

Hassan: Right now? Mainly that my I hurt a lot. Wyvern gave me one hell of a fight. But in the end, experience beat raw talent. Wyvern will be Grand Champion again some day, I'm certain about it. But now? For right now, the Arab American Dream is the TOP DOG in the Animated Wrestling League! All the pain, all the sacrifice, all the training, all of it was worth it because THIS (at this point he gestured to the championship belt) means I am the best wrestler in the world and I wouldn't trade this fifteen pounds of gold for every ounce in that building over there.

Ryu Sensei: At the moment, Wonder Kid is the next scheduled challenger for your title. Are you going to be ready to fight the Man Muscle Mountain?

Hassan: Wonder Kid's mouth is bigger that his muscles, and neither can hold a candle to his ego! Yes, he's going to be a challenge. But I just beat the unbeaten. Some say I just beat the unbeatable. Wonder Kid is big, but he's still human. I know he can be beaten, so I know I can beat him. Besides, who says he's even going to be #1 contender by the next title match? That's what I love about the AWL. You have to earn everything you get. And rest assured, I will continue to earn this title as long as I can.

With that I let him get back to his sightseeing. I tried to track down HAKAISHA! and the Doombunny to get their reactions to becoming the new AWL World's Tag Team Champions, but unfortunately I was unable to find them (Kyoto is a sea of people at the best of times, and Golden Week is one of the busy seasons). Please accept my apologies.

Last of the promos.

I'm back folks and I have the interviews and promos you've been waiting for. Yesterday was the undercard, today it's the main eventers:

Destroyers of DOOM!:
HAKAISHA! (Translated from Japanese):
It's good to be back! Yes, I'm currently #2 in the AWL Best 4, but things haven't been the same without my best friend. Now we are back and after sweeping the Tag Gauntlet, we are coming for the AWL World Tag Team Titles!

We have nothing but respect for The New Classics, that respect means that we will not hold back in our match tomorrow. We will do things the Right Way.

DOOMBUNNY:
Dangrightbigguy! It'sGREATtobebactintheAWL. I'vebeenawayforawhile. HadsomeinjuriesIhadtolethealup. ButnownownowwearebackandreadytobecomeTheGoldenDuoyetagain! WearetheDestroyersofDoom! What,youthinkthat'sastupidname?? We'llseehowstupidyouthinkitiswhenyou'relookingupatthelights!

The New Classics:
Sammy Nix: It looks like it's respect all around. We ain't got no problem with the big guy and the rabbit. But make no mistake. After everything we went through to finally stop Bullet Club and win these tag team titles, there ain't no way in hell we're giving them up without a fight. So bring it on boys!

Now for the Steel Cage Match between Project Tetsu and Jack Butcher. While Jack Butcher was unavailable for comment, Project Tetsu's creator Dr. Jigoku was more than happy to speak to us.

Dr. Jigoku:
I don't like to admit it, but I was wrong. Yes. While I've proven myself to be the SUPERIOR genius of the AWL, even lesser men can have flashes of insight that merit my attention. And the AWL Commissioner had such a moment of clarity when he made this Steel Cage Match. While would have been happy if he had just fired that savage throwback, this is even better! Now my iron project will finally get its hands on that primitive lump of mindless muscle and prove once and for all that he is...superior!

Wyvern (Translated from Japanese):
Tanaka Kenichi. Bad Luck Fale. Wolf. Project Tetsu. All men that I defeated to win or keep the AWL Grand Championship. Hassan, what do you think makes you different? You aren't bigger than Fale. You aren't stronger than Tetsu. You aren't more devious that Tanaka Kenichi. And you sure aren't crazier that Wolf.

But I know what you think makes you different. Power and heart. Power because you made this match. You took my manager away from me and you are going to make me beat you twice. Do you think you can outlast me or something? Well I'm afraid your wrong about that. You've wasted your power.

Now heart? Yes. You have great heart, great fighting spirit. I respect you for that and I have no doubt that you will be my greatest challenge yet. But don't ever underestimate MY heart. I have dreamt of nothing but being a pro wrestling champion since I was a child. When I came to this company I was given the task of carrying on the legacy of the single greatest wrestler the AWL has ever seen. Do you have any idea how hard that is? The pressure? The expectations? And you think 2 out of 3 falls scares me? You are out of your mind!

Tomorrow, we will fight. Tomorrow I will do what I've always done since I came here...Win!
Hassan:
One year. I've been talking about it ever since I won my 5th title defense and earned this match. The biggest and weirdest year of my life. I went from accepting an open challenge while injured to being the WWE Intercontinental Champion. From there to AWL IC Champion. And then 5 of the toughest beatings of my life. I closed the book on Yamada Jiro. I got my ass kicked by Sammy Nix. And got thrown all over the ring by both of the Los Neko Grande. And all of it is about one thing, not power, not heart, legitimacy.

I've been considered illegitimate my whole life. As a kid I was the weird foreigner. After 9/11 I was the terrorist. When I started wrestling, I was the guy who could only ever be the Iron Sheik ripoff. When I came to Japan, I was just another gaijin.

For the last year I've been on this journey to legitimacy. Yes, for the AWL Intercontinental Title, but more for myself. I am a champion. I AM good enough! I am not defined by my skin, my nationality, or my religion. I am Hassan. I am a professional wrestler. I am a champion! I will be the 3rd AWL Grand Champion...tomorrow.

Big batch of promos, part 1.

We are less than 48 hours away from Golden War 2016! The card is set and the wrestlers are packing up for the long train ride to Kyoto. But before the big show, I have several comments from wrestlers involved in Wednesday's event. So many in fact that I'm going to have to break this into two parts. For today, let's take a look at the undercard starting with:

Strike warriors:
Strike : (Translated from Spanish): I don't know what happened last week, but the referee made the wrong call. There is no reason we should have been disqualified in the Tag Gauntlet. I don't know how they did it, but those cheating RUZAI Basta-*

Ma-Ji-Ku: Hold on partner. It doesn't matter. RUZAI didn't win the Tag Gauntlet so they're in the same place we are, zero points. As for Joey, I've known him a long time and he's one of the best referees in the business. He made a mistake. It happens to the best of us. But this Wednesday in Kyoto, make no mistake. We will prove that we are the better tag team and that cheaters never prosper!

RUZAI:
田中健一: Fakku yuu 仮面野郎! We am tag team za besto!! You is DIE!!! 京都で流罪のWIN!

Next, some words from the two former New Year's Tournament Champions who will fight each other at the Golden War:

Wonder Kid:
Ugh! How many times to I have to beat this little turd? Yes, he ended my first championship reign, big freaking deal! Ever since then I have consistently beaten the living piss out of him. It's been years people, get over Ganba, he's yesterday's news. Me? I focus on the future. The future is that I will challenge the AWL Grand Champion, whomever that may be, after Golden War. Wyvern, don't feel bad. Every undefeated streak comes to an end at some point. Mine did, I got over it. You will too when I take that belt from your unconscious fingers. Hassan? If you manage to beat Wyvern before I do, CONGRATULATIONS! I'm dead serious Hassan, you deserve it! You deserve to be the transitional champion before I take the Grand Championship and finally have my year+ long title reign. Hassan, Wyvern, I wish you both the best of luck this Wednesday, it will be an privilage to beat either of you.

ガンバ (Translated from Japanese):
Don't look past me Wonder Kid. For years we have fought and yes, you have beaten me more often then I have beaten you. But in the biggest matches, when titles have been on the line, I have the better record. We have had parallel careers. You are the longest reigning champion. I have the most title reigns. You have won the New Year's Tournament twice. So have I. Perhaps we are destined to fight forever, I don't know about such things. However, I do know that when I beat you at the Golden War, I can write my own ticket to the AWL Best 4 and a 7th reign at the top of this company and my first as AWL Grand Champion.

I was going to get some words from Yamada Jiro, but no. He's a racist fool and I'm not giving him air time on this blog unless the AWL Commissioner makes me. So there.

And lastly, a special sit down interview I conducted with the special guest referee for this Wednesday's AWL Dojo Graduation Match, Dragon!:

Ryu Sensei: Dragon, thank you for taking the time to talk with me. First of all, it's been about half a year since your final match with Yamada Jiro. We've heard from countless wrestlers over the year how hard it is to leave the squared circle. How are you handling your retirement?

Dragon: No problem my friend. I won't lie, it's been difficult. I always knew wrestling wasn't a forever job, but I guess I'd always assumed that I'd leave the ring on my own terms. But the good news is that I haven't left the squared circle at all. The best thing the AWL Commissioner ever did for me was appointing me head trainer at the AWL Dojo. I'm in the ring every day working with these young kids, teaching them the ropes, helping them find themselves. It's fantastic! I never thought I'd been a good coach, but something about this has really clicked with me.

R: Very glad to hear that. Speaking of your students, two of them will wrestle at the Golden War for a spot on the main roster. So far, the AWL Commissioner has released no information about these wrestlers, not even their names. Can you give me any info about them?

D: Sorry Ryu, but the boss has ordered me to keep my mouth shut. But there is some news I can break. First, since neither man is officially a member of the roster, this match will not be recorded on the official AWL Win-Loss Records. That was my request. Whoever wins, I want them to start with a clean slate when they join the roster.

Second, I think I can get away with telling you that both of these wrestlers are Japanese. Also, one of them is a specialist, kind of like Sammy Nix's suplexes and Chiba Akagi's submissions. He's easily the quickest study of my current crop of students. The other man is a second generation wrestler from a proud Japanese wrestling tradition. He has something that I think is going to turn the AWL upside down and inside out. But you'll have to wait until the 4th to find out what that is.

Lastly, there's been some confusion about what happens to the loser. I read a rumor online that the loser of the match will be expelled from the AWL Dojo. That. Is. A. LIE!!

In this sport, like everything else come to think of it, rejection and failure are a part of life. The loser of the Graduation Match will return to the Dojo for further training. It will certainly be a setback and he may have to do some extra chores for a while, but I'm not turfing out a student I believe in that easily. And I wouldn't have put either of these men in this match if I didn't believe in both of them.

R: Thank you Dragon. I appreciate your time and your passion. One last question, Wednesday at the Golden War you will NOT be in the corner of Wyvern as Hassan has banned both you and American Beetle from ringside. Your thoughts?

D: I'm not worried in the slightest. Wyvern is a once in a lifetime find. He was going to have to leave the proverbial nest at some point anyway, no time like the present. Win or lose (and I think he's going to win) I couldn't be prouder of him.

R: With that, back to HQ and the future version of myself posting this to the blog.

Thanks past me, you handsome devil, and that's all I've got for today. Tune in tomorrow for comments from the main eventers including the participants in both of our championship matches.
